Yesterday I Photographed the wedding of Monique and Nicholas at the beautiful Basilica in Newark NJ and then we headed to the Lake Valhalla Club in Montville. I added a little something different to this wedding, I took with me a 1940s/1950's large format (4x5) all manual camera (that produces a negative many times larger than a 35mm shot the type a newspaper photographer of the time would use while covering an event back then. As a matter of fact that famous Iwo Jima battle photo of US Soldiers raising the American Flag was taken with this type of camera) combined with a modern day Instax Wide back (which I had to do some adapting to shoot handheld) and took a few shots with it. You can see a short clip below of the making of one of the shots. The couple really enjoyed the experience and the photos.

30 Years ago in 1993 while still learning photography I snuck a camera into the Garden State Arts center (now PNC Arts Center) under my denim jacket. My objective was to take photos of the BB King show. I had pretty good seats, I think I was in the first 10 Rows right in the center. I probably shot about 20 photos that night and this one is for sure my favorite. The camera I used was my trusty and favorite Canon AE-1 that I took over from my Dad at the time and read the manual 100 times. That Camera, which my dad bought around 1981, everything about it brings back memories from then and my initial interest in photography. Years later I gave the camera to my Sister, years after that she gave it to her Daughter and a few years after that my Niece learning that I had a connection with that camera gave it back to me.

Just did a Video on my 2 roll challenge where I had 2 rolls of film, a total of 24 shots (thats nothing in the digital world!) and about 2 hours to find subjects to photograph in New York City. While one can shoot digital endlessly for free, with film besides it having a different quality, every time you press the shutter it costs you between $1-$2 dollars, so with film you have to choose your shots carefully and make the correct exposure! The video shows all 24 shots and a little intro with info about the project.

17 Years ago (this coming Saturday) was an interesting wedding day with a twist. Hurricane Ernesto had swept through Florida in late August of 2006 and was heading right to New Jersey. Of course as the photographer I had my eye on the storm all week. To make things even more interesting the couples wedding reception was being held literally on the beach in Sea Bright at a venue that I believe no longer exists. As the days passed Hurricane Ernesto turned into Tropical Storm Ernesto as it crawled its way North. We would get tons of rain and strong winds but at least it was no longer a Hurricane. Nonetheless photos on the beach itself was out of the equation, winds were still hitting 40-60MPH gusts and waves were violently breaking on the shore. Now whats the twist you ask? Well the Grooms father....his name was also Ernesto. What were the odds? This shot is of us leaving the church before we headed down the shore. This would not be my last Hurricane Wedding...

In a distant life back in 1993, I commuted for about a year from New Jersey to Staten Island to work at my last Non-Photography job as a Manager for record store chain called Coconuts. Every day I would go over the Goethals Bridge and back. When i did come back usually around sunset, i would see smoke stacks, chimneys and whatever all that industrial stuff was, with a sunset behind it. And everyday i would think “that would make a nice photo”. Minutes later when driving through Elizabeth to get to my at the time town Union, I would pass a park on my right and the trees all seemed neatly lined up. I would again think “that would make a cool photo”. It was these repeated moments over months that made me finally think about photography seriously. I dusted off a few cameras, signed up for some classes at The New School in NYC and eventually quit my job at Coconuts. Funny thing is I never took that industrial sunset photo nor the trees in the park. The only shot i ever did take of it was this iphone pic when i recently passed it. Maybe i should still go back do it justice afterall it did lead to 30 years as a working photographer.

Skylands Manor yesterday. Such a beautiful building. Here's how I took this photo:

This couple had a large wedding party and as we walked through the building heading towards the Library for some photos, we were passing through this room when I said 'Lets take a shot here'. The Bride had mentioned that she wanted photos inside the building because it is so beautiful. First thing I did was tell everyone 'Turn towards the windows' (so I could get some nice natural light on them).

Next, I knew that with a group this large I didn't want to simply line them up and its not an easy task to pose 20+ people in tight quarters with furniture laying around. But as soon as I saw this room I had a plan. I asked them to randomly position themselves mixing up boys and girls. I directed them in general directions and fined tuned from there. A few stood directly behind the bride and groom and that is a no no for this shot because it will distract and take away from the couple, so I asked them to move to their left and right.

While the Room is big, it looks bigger in the photo because I used a very wide lens. The bridesmaid all the way on the left and the groomsman all the way on the right were REALLY far apart. If you can imagine a clocks hand at 9:13, thats how far apart they were. Only a very wide lens could capture this. One Bridesmaid was kinda 'lost' in the background so I asked her to fill a spot on the couch. After testing for exposure and focus (this lens is manual focus) one last thing I did was to raise the camera above my head for extra height and then I took the shot.

The whole shot took about 3 or 4 minutes including a few repeat shots. This isn't a shoot for Vogue where you may have hours or days to get one shot, with a dozen assistants, professional models and coffee breaks. This is Wedding Photography: You have minutes. The challenge for a wedding photographer is that not only are we looking for good creative shots we are also usually on a tight clock, we need to work efficiently while also managing large groups of people, keeping them relaxed and happy. Wedding Photographers basically create art on demand, live and under pressure. Hundreds of times a day.

There is lots going on at least in this photopgraphers head throughout a wedding. So next time your are at a wedding and you see a photographer working, know that they are multitasking plans in their head at that very moment.

In March of 2020 when Covid broke out and the world seemed to be falling apart, my Father was ill with Cancer in Brazil and I flew down there to see him for a couple weeks. While there Covid quickly escalated to the point that when I arrived in Brazil I told friends there that in the US people were “raiding” supermarkets. I suggested maybe they should go grocery shopping ASAP…they laughed seeing covid as a problem elsewhere in the world. A week later shelves in Brazilian supermarkets were starting to empty also. We know the rest of the story. In the last days of March 2020 I caught one of the last planes out of Brazil before everything was shut down. There may have been 20 passengers on the International flight.
Once i arrived back I found a US that had by now locked themselves in their houses. Oddly enough over the last couple of years before that, I had toyed around with the concept of photographing New York City “empty”. But obviously doing that seemed rather impossible short of some photoshop trickery. Still I thought it would be an interesting concept and planned on at some point in 2020 starting the project. But now upon return from Brazil I was confronted with the reality that the streets of New York City were actually fairly empty. I decided that I had to photograph it. This was not something that happened every day (or century). I grabbed my camera, mask and monopod (for elevated views) and off I went. I’m currently working on editing and putting all the images into a photo book. What do you think good idea?
