This is the week when I start to feel the New Year energy. Organizing seeds, looking though catalogues, walking the farm to see what needs to be transplanted, digging out old journals, dusting off old plans… Whatever the source of the energy, I’m glad for it. We all need that time to create something new for ourselves.

I’ve posted workshops on the website for the coming season (I’m sure I’ll add in more as I start to know our family’s plans for 2024). I hope you can join us in the studio - it’s always magical and one of the best parts about Fairview Farm & Flowers!

Also, if you want to create your own private workshop, I’m available for dreaming that up too!

When I was little our house burned. It was the first house my parents ever owned. They bought it at an auction and spent countless hours trekking out from the city to fix it up.

My mom has always been an avid gardener, having grown up on a farm in rural Kansas, and the property at the new house was a gardener’s dream - it had barns and overgrown beds - a restoration project that I bet would have led to so many cool discoveries. Sadly, it burned the summer we moved in and she never got to see what treasures might have been languishing for decades.

We spent that year living in hotels, apartments, renting a number of places before we bought the house in Tuxedo Park, NY. The deer there ate pretty much everything. But - along the back porch there was a huge bed of peonies running the length of the house.

We called them Tuxedo Peonies. They were spectacular.

We when moved years later, my mom dug up clumps and planted them at our new house. I resented moving but those peonies blooming each year made me feel connected to my childhood home.

When I bought my first house, we divided those peonies and planted them there. And we when moved again - into the house right next door to my parents - I divided them again and brought them along.

I still call them Tuxedo Peonies… but now I know they’re actually

So many of the flowers I grow have a special meaning to me. How about you? Let me know a flower story below! 👇
