Local flowers just can’t be beat.
🌷🌷🌷
On Earth Day this week, and hosted a farmer florist meetup for the North Shore flower community. The farmers had their wholesale lists, the florists had their event colors in mind and everyone chatted over gummy worm pudding “dirt cups” and flower themed snacks. The local flower community is growing fast. Clients and customers want the *best* flowers and our nearby farmers have them. Seek out the ones close to you and if you’re north of Boston, check out these absolute rockstars:

If you need some color and beauty to go with the snow this weekend, is hosting Flora in Winter today through Sunday. My piece this year is sponsored by and features American grown flowers and foliages sourced from and even some incredible early anemone from
💙💙💙
Letting the bush ivy’s naturally blue berries steal the show, this waterfall of blooms is a nod to the importance of water. Water is life and we shouldn’t knowingly poison it for future generations. This piece goes deeper as it was created with no floral foam, a staple of the floral industry and an inherent microplastic known to pollute our waterways and aquatic life. It was instead designed with all compostable, biodegradable, recyclable or reusable mechanics. I worked with the museum to get approval for several floral foam alternatives this year including bricks and OSHUN pouches. These are newer products I’ve used in my own event work for years that needed to be vetted for the safety of the artwork in the museum. It was very fulfilling to have them finally approved and then used to hold and hydrate American grown flowers for the museum guests to safely enjoy. The entire arrangement will be composted, recycled or reused, making this one of the most sustainable museum pieces I’ve made to date. It was worth every moment of work spent to get here.

I spent part of last week at The Sustainable Flowers Project hosted at in NJ. It was three incredible days of learning, listening and growing with likeminded flower people. We were surrounded by and designed with all locally grown NJ flowers and foliages. It was sponsored by and we used several sustainable mechanics during the workshop as well. Organizers and presenters and .j._mcgrath_design both shared their wisdom and offered a dream lineup of speakers and instructors who approached sustainability from all angles, not just environmental and financial. I’m still processing the inspiring and insightful lectures/discussions with and .t.fleisher They all spoke to our flower souls differently and profoundly. There were many important conversations happening in every corner of the garden and greenhouses, all geared toward bettering the future for our industry, planet and people. I’m rejuvenated for the work ahead and the people on the path I share. 💚

Tomorrow is Small Business Saturday! Please shop small and local this holiday, and frankly, all seasons. Here are some of my favorite locally owned shops, makers, artists, writers and chefs. They all offer shipping, curbside pickup and a few have pop-ups happening this season so check all them out. When you shop small, you support families, your local economy, your community and the dreams of people who delight in working their tails off at their craft. Plus, they’re amazing at it! Happy shopping!

Yesterday was an incredible day for A&A to tie the knot It was very, very hot, the venue was in full bloom and the wedding concluded with a dumpling truck. More to come but for now, the American grown all stars this week included:
•peonies from
•cafe au lait dahlia from
•fata morgana scabiosa and bunny tail from
•celosia and foxglove from
•snapdragon and gomphrena from
•incredible Cali greens, the most fragrant Princess Miyuki garden roses and most of the beautiful local stems from the ever hustling team (who I met up with three times last week to get all the goods)

I can’t wait to share more, but for now, just imagine planting your face in this urn and giving it a big ole sniff 👃🏼

An early blooming hybrid peony, Rosedale looks a lot like a rose before it opens all the way up. It’s got lovely deep red color and fluttery pollen laden stamens. It smells florally…like a rose… It has shorter stems but a great vase life for a delicate variety of peony. I grew this stem of magic from robust rootstock.

This late season beaut is Sword Dance! It’s a magenta-red color with a party of stamenoids in yellow and red at the center. It’ll last all week as a cut flower if cut when just starting to open and the foliage turns beautiful reds and yellows in the fall. A prolific grower, there are many flowers per plant on tall, upright stems.

Catching up on a few installments of and we’re sticking with the reds. Coming in fabulously this weekend is Command Performance: a giant, soft red stunner of a herbaceous peony. One of the largest and showy of the early crimsons, it has a light, fresh scent and a monster amount of petals. This rare and desirable beauty was grown by and it was one of the biggest blooms we enjoyed on the work table under the rain canopy this weekend!

Today’s piggybacks on the previous post which featured a bouquet that used this beauty: Red Grace. An early blooming, double petaled, bomb peony that’s stunningly large, it commands attention. It’s almost a full ball shape at its peak and is just chock full of luscious petals. This beauty is just starting to open up (hand for size) and she was grown by I’m delighted to be back with them hauling in the beauty this year!

A note on growth 🌱 Looking through my rolodex of peony photos and I come across some of my favorite bouquets. I made this in November of 2018, which is way out of season for peonies but check those in season amaryllis... It’s not a combo I ever thought I’d make again as I’ve since made a firm commitment to design seasonally using American and regionally grown blooms. However, in the last week I saw a local farmer posting some trials of amaryllis in a greenhouse. Sweet Christmas. In June. I didn’t screengrab the story and I forget who it was so please DM if it was you bc I’m super interested in the process/season… and want to buy them. The growth in our local flower industry has been incredible and a privilege to watch as farmers extend seasons and bring new product to market consistently. It’s a delight and a joy to design with the best flowers and foliage available.

This heat has them rollin in… second installment of Paeonia’s Peonies of the Day is: Buckeye Belle! An early blooming, deep red/maroon peony, I think it has some of the prettiest stamenoids in the game. It’s got a good vase life and there is one big, beautiful bud per stem. Not much of a scent but the fullest, fluttery petals in the wind!

It’s a little early this year but it’s peony season cupcakes! Let’s learn about them together! Introducing the first installment of Paeonia’s Peonies of the Day. We’re starting out with an absolute beauty, First Arrival. This homegrown stunner popped open a few days ago. It’s one of the earliest ITOH/intersectional peonies to bloom. Intersectional peonies are hybrids between tree and herbaceous peonies so they’re typically blooming later than woodland/tree peonies and earlier than the more common herbaceous peonies that are cut flower and garden popular. They have a pretty descent vase life and tip quite towards the fruity smell of floral for a peony! For those interested, I sourced the roots for this beauty from who has rootstock sales in the fall!

All designers have flowers that they’ve had trouble with in the past, despite their best efforts. Hellebores have been that for me, always wilting too quickly despite trying different types of conditioning, water additives and refrigeration. It’s been years since I bought them. I mentioned it to the brains and they explained wilting is usually from growers harvesting from young plants and not the conditioning after being cut. They source their hellebores from farms with mature plants (like three generations worth of maturity) so they’re reliable. I bought some to test a few weeks ago and they lasted well over a week on my dining room table. I was floored. There’s always something to learn and something new. It gave me the peace of mind to use them in event work and hawt damn, they brought something really special to this past weekend’s wedding! Wholesalers who share their knowledge and expertise like that are worth their weight in flower gold. I’m thankful for them. I’m also pulling out my propane torch for poppy season 👀
