We've just realized that the names of those who donated via credit card on our web site were omitted from the donor's list. We simply forgot to fetch them when we were typing up the list. Rest assured that your donation was received, appreciated, and put to good use.

We'll fix this error when we get back to a pc, but it will probably be tonight or tomorrow before that happens.

Many apologies.

It has suddenly turned into winter! We love the cold, because EVERYBODY looks fat in a parka!

But before we settle in to the cold and dark of the winter solstice, here is a little wrap-up of the 2024 When Pigs Fly Day of Giving Back, Free Community Thanksgiving Dinner:

We served a total of 933 meals. Of that total, 604 were either carry-out or delivery to shut-ins. A little over 300 folks joined us in the dining room for thanksgiving and fellowship, and we had a ball. We haven't yet counted up the number of volunteers, but we're going to have to get a bigger sign-up poster because we ran out of room on the one we had.

We had planned for possibly 1,000 meals, so we didn't run out of anything this year. In fact, we had a little bit of leftovers, which is perfect planning, as far as we’re concerned... Unserved food has already been distributed to the Senior Center, Childrens Home Society, and the Family Refuge Center. A little bit of unopened food went to the Lewisburg Food Bank. We had a great cleanup crew come out on Friday morning, and we hauled the last of our equipment home today (Saturday), leaving the space at the fairgrounds all ship shape.

We cooked 750 pounds of turkey, 250 pounds of white potatoes, 200 pounds of sweet potatoes, 40 #10 cans of green beans, 30 #10 cans of corn, 1000 homemade dinner rolls from Blue Moon bakery, 15 gallons of fresh pressed cider from Cowboy’s Produce, and on and on.

One volunteer calculated that we served an average of 4.5 plates per minute during the afternoon hours.

Things went particularly smoothly this year, and we are beyond grateful to the many donors and volunteers without whom this event could not have happened. One volunteer driver wrote:

“Watching the folks waiting in line for takeout, picking up deliveries and all the volunteers putting this together for them, and also looking into the dining room and seeing the people eating and volunteer servers that are friends of ours, all carried a very positive vibe, with an almost jovial atmosphere. Folks were talking with each other and were happy, patient, and cooperative to make this all happen. There was help putting the delivery meals in our car, with our own meals included, it just all went nicely.

While different, the deliveries were frequently as positive, and nothing negative. There was a comment from [a person] at the Shell station that said she had never done this before but she heard the food was wonderful. The meals were for her and her son, and 2 coworkers and they were all quite excited. Was fun and felt positive to see folks find a way to celebrate, even though they had to work. “

It's the fellowship, camaraderie and shared feeling of gratefulness that makes our hearts sing.

The list of donors is too long for a facebook post, but you can just click here: https://www.pigsflybbq.com/2024-donors-list. Please let these folks know that they are noticed and appreciated.

Thanks again! We had a blast!!

My phone died this morning, so I can't yet retrieve photos to post, but we wanted to briefly thank all of the volunteers and guests who made the 2024 Day of Giving back Thanksgiving Dinner a big success. Wow. We fretted over details for weeks and in the end, we've never seen it go so smoothly.

We have a volunteer crew coming this morning (Friday) to clean up the Fairgrounds, and once we've gotten a chance to catch our breath, we'll get out lists and numbers for you. For now, many thanks to each and every contributer, volunteer and guest. We had a wonderful day of fellowship and Thanksgiving!

Going through the larder in preparation for the free Thanksgiving Dinner on Thursday.

Wow! You guys have really contributed a lot of food! But, we still need 40 quarts of heavy cream, and lots of 2-liter bottles of pop of assorted flavors. If you're in a position to donate all or part of this, please drop it by Swift Level, or bring it to the West Virginia Building at the fairgrounds in Wednesday.

Please call Kellen to make your pledge. (304) 249-8124.

Also, pie donations are running below cost. We've spent $370 on our ingredients but have only gotten about $100 in toward that fund. Pie ingredients are high this year! You can donate a pie at Swift Level for only $15, or just bring by cash or check. Or you can donate by credit card at https:www.pigsflybbq.com/2024-donations.

We realize that things are tight right now, but we trust that some of you can squeeze a little more and get us into the black.

Thanks and Happy Thanksgiving,

Kellen and Mike

We will also do deliveries. Call (304) 646-8796 to order for delivery. Please don't place orders on voice mail, text, or anything else. We can't be sure we've got you written down until you speak with a human volunteer. And, be patient. We'll be peddling as fast as we can.

Planning is moving forward for When Pigs Fly's Tenth Annual Day of Giving Back, free Thanksgiving Dinner. Dinner will be served from 12-4 on Thanksgiving Day, in the West Virginia Building at the State Fair of West Virginia. Please plan to enter and exit from the gates on the southbound side of US 219, then follow the signs to parking.

All are welcome. There is absolutely no charge. No paperwork. No tricks. No gimmicks. Just show up and eat. You can throw a little money in the tip jar, but you don't have to.

Volunteer registrations and donations are coming in, but of course we need more. We especially need volunteers on Thursday afternoon, and Friday morning to help with packing up and clean up. Please call Cathey Sawyer at (304) 645-5401 or email her at [email protected] to volunteer.

For other information, including details and how to donate, please visit our web site at www.pigsflybbq.com and click on the links.

Now is the time when we turn our attention to making sure that those who can benefit from this event the most are made aware of it. We respectfully ask churches and other organizations to announce it. We ask individuals to look around your neighborhood for those who are older and likely to be lonely for the holiday. Invite them spend time with you and your family, or offer them a ride to the event. Generally just spread the word. Remember, not everybody uses Facebook.

We prefer to have people join us for food and fellowship in our dining room, but we will offer take-out and, if we have enough volunteer drivers, delivery to those who can't comfortably leave home. We'll publish a special number for orders shortly, and it will start being answered at 9:00 on Wednesday morning. Please hold your calls until then, or we're apt to lose your order.

One last thing: This event has always been all about good will, fellowship, and gratefulness. Everybody is welcome. This should go without saying, but we know that feelings are running strong right now. We will keep this event completely non-political, as we always have. Please keep your strong opinions close to your chest, and don't bring political paraphanalia, including hats, tee-shirts, buttons, literature, or whatever into the building. If you forget this rule, we'll ask you to leave your stuff in the car.

Happy Thanksgiving! Hope to see everybody there!

Big thank you to everybody who came by on what turned out to be a chillier, more blustery day than forecast. Special thanks if you bought a hot dog or a kielbasa or two.

The good news is that we got the smoker fixed this afternoon, and the pork is cooking along nicely as of Friday evening. So, we'll be back at it in front of Swift Level Fine Meats on Saturday, and we should have plenty of pulled pork for sammiches for ya.

Come and git it!

_-------------------------------------------------

When Pigs Fly will be open on Saturday, November 16, with Weiner King hot dogs, keilbasa sausage, and pulled pork sandwiches. Watch for us in front of Swift Level Fine Meats, on the southbound side of the Fairlea racetrack, directly across from the fairgrounds. We'll be open from 11:00am until about dark daily. Look for the popup tent (the We**ie Wagon is in our shop getting some renovation work done).

We've got premium, all-beef hot dogs with all the fixin's. $4 each, or 2 for $7.00. Tasty Kielbasa sausages with saurkraut, stone-ground mustard, or just about anything else for only $6. Slow smoked, pulled pork bbq sandwiches with your choice of our five homemade barbeque sauces for $11.

We also have a meal deal consisting of 2 hot dogs, chips, and a cold drink for only $10.

We now take cash, check, and all major credit cards (prices slightly higher for credit).

Come on down for a nice, quick, reasonably priced meal. We'll be looking for ya!

Planning is moving ahead for When Pigs Fly's 2024 "Day of Giving Back" Free Thanksgiving Dinner at the Fairgrounds this year. We are receiving donations, and volunteers are signing up. We are grateful for every single one of you!

BUT, VOLUNTEER SIGN-UPS ARE RUNNING BEHIND THIS SAME POINT LAST YEAR! We've gotta tell you, we're getting a little worried. We need more help if we're going to be able to pull this dinner off.

We know that some of you are planning to help but just haven't had the time to call Cathey and get on the schedule yet. We understand. Everybody is busy. But, we'd appreciate it very much if you'd take a minute and dial the phone, so we can get you scheduled and keep things organized.

If you're thinking at all aout helping out, please call Cathey and talk it over. Or check out or web page at https://www.pigsflybbq.com/2024-free-thanksgiving-1 for a complete description of all the job roles we have availalble. We need help on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday. We schedule you for a 2-3 hour shift, so you have time off to spent with your family. No experience necessary. We need you!

Please call Cathey Sawyer at (304) 645-5401, or email [email protected] and she will get you on the schedule. Thanks!

Again, we appreciate everybody who has already donated or volunteered. We know that more people will come out for this effort, as you always do!

Thanks again,

Kellen and Mike

What's Up with the We**ie Wagon?

Wondering what happened to our New York Style Hot Dog Cart? Read on!

Well, here's the deal:

As many of you know, we purchased the New York Style hot dog cart previously operated by "Hot Dog Dave" in Renick, West Virginia. We took it out for two test runs, both at the White Sulphur Springs Farmer's Market. We listened to your feedback, learned a lot, and made some changes.

We upgraded to a top-quality, all beef hot dog. We ditched the brauts, and found some really nice Keilbasa Smoked Sausages to replace them. We also found some better, nicer, softer, fatter buns.

We also opened up the Wagon to adjust the flame on the burners. We found them rusted and cruddy, so decided to replace them with new ones. While we're at it, we also decided to replace all of the propane and water system plumbing, install new tail lights, replace the rusted fenders, and install a spare tire.

We also bought a custom made, heavy-duty cover for it.

Whew. We've been waiting for parts to come in, and are now ready to start the tear down and rebuilding process.

It will be a project. We'll try to keep you up to date with before, during and after photos. Check back periodically for updates, and watch for the We**ie Wagon out on the streets!

Meanwhile, you'll see us in a white pop-up tent, selling those same excellent hot dogs.

Come and see us!
