Why Picnics?
When I started looking at opportunities for a new business, I thought about the things I enjoy: travel, interior design, gift-giving, the outdoors, cooking, etc. If you’re close to me, you know I’ve explored a few entrepreneurial businesses in the past such as a travel app and a boutique gift-giving site. After lots of research & development, those were determined to not be viable. Fair enough. I mean, who can compete with TripAdvisor and Amazon!? Anyways, while visiting Perth, Australia, I came across a business that just catered picnics, but not just any picnic... real plates and silverware, tables, linens, pillows, floral arrangements... and beautiful spreads of food! So while no idea is original, I found this is a business model not necessarily being executed here locally. There’s something so romantic about combining the beauty of the outdoors with food, friends and family. The idea of helping people celebrate their milestones was the biggest appeal to me. There’s something about providing an experience that people won’t forget, that people will share with others and yes, even post to Instagram. I enjoy cooking. I enjoy decorating. I enjoy entertaining. I enjoy the outdoors. So, voila! Plated Picnics was born! Now, want to hear the funny side of how this idea was born? I don’t ask for much from my husband but ever since we started dating, I’ve always wanted a picnic. We’ve been to incredible places all over the world: beaches, mountain tops, National Parks, etc. and yet to this day, years later, never a picnic. So, the joke is, in order for me to get him to do a picnic, I had to start an entire business around it and he thinks that’s the real reason I started Plated. Perhaps! But regardless, it’s a fun, exciting company that supports everything I get excited about and I’m thrilled to see where it goes.
