Rev. Michael Torphy's December Blog
Stepped In It
Many of us have had the experience of walking on a sidewalk and stepping in it. Not a great feeling. What is next is, we get to clean it up. Again, not fun. So, the question is, do we complain while we clean? Are we caught in how it affects us? Or do we do the cleaning-up task mindfully? This a true test of whether we are doing or being.
Symbolically, we can sometimes step in it. We unconsciously or unexpectedly step into a challenge. Maybe the challenge came from something we’ve said or didn’t say; something we’ve done or didn’t do. Maybe it was simply an unforeseen accident. It matters not, we have stepped in it, it stinks, and we get to clean it up.
How we deal with it is what’s important. We can deal with it at the level of the effect (that which cause it) or we can choose to deal with it spiritually. The first way may or may not solve the challenge, and it can take a long time or maybe it will never be resolved. The second way solves the challenge, but more importantly, whether we have solved the challenge or not, dealing with anything spiritually brings with it the gift of spiritual growth.
It is important to remember that we are more than the challenge. Once we have gone through any challenges mindfully, we have gained more than overcoming it. We have expanded and strengthened our awareness of who we are and how we function in the world.
When we step into a challenge let us be confident. Let us know that as we mindfully clean up whatever we have stepped in everything we need to know will be given to us. We will have gained so much more than overcoming.
