Urban Adult Social Dancing

Partnering or Line. Dance is an expression that does not have to stop after 30 something. I found urban style dances as a refresher and alternative to the regular club scene. For years, I worked as a leader at Hanscom Chapel, Hanscom AFB, MA coordinating events for Easter and Christmas Programs, leading and teaching Liturgical dance for the Kids and Adults and Theatre Ministry. Once that season ended, I found myself looking for other avenues to dance. I’ve tried Salsa and Bachata but fell in love with “Walkin” first, the music you here at Steppin sets and then the dance itself “Steppin”. I was well on my way traveling 1-2 hours in traffic to attend steppin lessons as well as starting website formerly “New England Steppin”, dedicated to the journey along with a few Spring Flings events until the commute was unbearable and Line Dancing was my new fix. I started a Line Dance Program at the Holland Community Center that eventually took off and still exist 9 years later --New England Soul Line Dance Network hosted by NE SOUL Instructional Team. Line dancing is different from steppin. You do not need a partner, the self-expression is wonderful and tons of fun but the dances are forever changing and non-lasting and of course everything changes. In between, I managed to keep a Stepper’s Set for 5 years straight monthly “INTHEZONETHURS” which was open to all steppers despite what group or class you were in. I also managed the event side of MsSonia Weddings & Events which also requires a lot of time especially if I added the wedding coordination and a dance element to the event. Throughout the years, I have experienced layoffs, setbacks, 2 sons building successful careers of their own, moved several times in NE but it was always dance that help me keep my Sanity and my exercise. Nonetheless, I have a heart of a Stepper and I am back starting all over again because I have forgotten what I did learn, and missed all the changes as the dance evolved 8 yrs ago. Despite, a bad fall which effects my left knee and right angle, I am still dancing with limitations so you now you know why that extended-right, Left reverse turn is a little slow for me--until the body warms up. My goal is to contribute to Steppin as much as did for line dance right here in New England- specifically giving the North Shore something to do. My family and friends know that “I love it” Love Steppin and will be a Line Dancer for Life( LD4L)

In 2017, I kicked off a new “Step With Me Campaign” to dive back into Steppin and hosted Dance Urban Steppin Weekend Oct 2018 in Quincy, MA with a “Step With Me Team” team of Instructors. Boston’s first Set of the Summer “The Nautical Set” which is coming back Summer 2019. There will not be a Vet Set for 2018 but Dance Urban Holiday is returning and will be held at the Dance Union Studio. Thank you to all promoters, teachers, venues, planners, dancers, dj’s that have crossed by path. I’m especially thankful to my family who have watched me share my passion for dance with others. I also thank God for allowing me to give something back to my community, stay healthier, become wiser in decision making and most of all prayerful. It is His Strength and His Daily Bread that keeps me going.
