Bird Banding-Why are birds banded?

The data gathered from bird banding data is useful in both scientific research and management and conservation projects. It makes possible the studies of individual identification of birds migration, behavior and social structure, life-span and survival rate, reproductive success and population growth.

Every ba**er participates in studies of dispersal and migration by sending all their banding data in to a central site, the Bird Banding Laboratory. When banded birds are captured, released alive and reported from somewhere else the movements of the individual bird can be reconstructed.

It has helped researchers identify migratory paths, flight patterns and nesting grounds/ behaviors. If you see a banded bird you can also report it to help the study at www.reportband.gov.
