Happy 40th Anniversary to House Music!
To celebrate please watch for some special merchandise I'll be starting to release tomorrow (all my proceeds go to the Jocelyn Needs A Controller Fund!) And of course you can expect lots more posts about the early days and development of house.
While there were certainly already records that had been released and were being referred to as 'house music' on January 20th 1984 Jesse saunders released the first record ever to be intentionally written to be and marketed as house music; the seminal piece was called On & On , and the earliest pressings of it fetch quite a pretty penny to this day as you can see here on the site discogs, a great resource for all things vinyl.

Ever wonder where house music got its name? So do modern house music historians! By most accountings it was a shortening of the word "Warehouse" which was the name of one of the popular Chicago underground clubs where disco music was being played fast, often with a steady four to the floor kick drum that we know as the hallmark clubhouse music to this day. But others remember it differently and contend that because the first producers of house music all worked in little home studios the music was simply called house because it was made in the house. Do any senior House family folk remember differently?
And by the way, I do want to be clear, those clubs in Chicago where house became house and the music of our heart was born where the home away from home of a predominantly black and gay audience. House music was birthed, nurtured, and raised by black q***r folk and always give the members of that community their due gratitude.
Ever wonder why you always hear the word Jack or name Jack in house music? Most scholarly tellings attributed to a jackknife like movement of dancing at those early Chicago House clubs, very sexual and very distinctive but my research in the past shows that there was at some time in the 1400s-ish a dancing plague and it's victims were said to Jack In motion. Just throwing it out there but I wonder if our friend Jack comes from Chicago or a plague!
He posted to my post for more information or see the first comment for a link to Jesse saunders own book about the history of house music!
Questions, critiques, or answers to my questions are of course welcome in the comments here however if it's going to hurt my feelings please keep it to DM so my ego doesn't get kicked in the teeth too!
I especially like to hear from some of the ogs of the house family with the recollections as invite all of you to do a little digging and post some information about the last 40 years in house.
