Ever since I discovered the Guinness Book of World Records as a little kid, I wanted to be in it.

8 years ago today, I began my World Record Attempt for the Largest Modelling Balloon Sculpture By An Individual in my hometown of Cincinnati, Ohio.

As of this writing, no one else in the entire world has been able to beat it.

Hi, everybody! First, let me say thank you for all the love on my posts recently: it means a lot to see you all interacting with and sharing my posts!

Switching gears a bit: I saw this on another page and felt like I needed to share here as well. This isn’t directed at anyone in particular, just food for thought and I hope that you keep it in mind the next time you ask an artist how much they charge for their services and decide that they are “too expensive”

Original post below (with a few edits):

“Did you know that balloon artists, face painters (and all artists for that matter) invest hours upon hours learning their craft, training, gaining experience and constantly improving?

Did you know that when you ask them to "donate their time" or ask for a discount you are also asking them to donate their gas to get to your event, their supplies which they purchase, as well as their time, plus a good chance they had to turn down a paying job to accommodate you? Would you be willing to donate your time if you had invested as much as we do?

Would you be willing to do your job for free?

“Donating our time" means we can't pay for our supplies, pay our bills, buy groceries, buy gas or even buy the supplies we need for jobs. Our costs are going up too and many of us do not have full-time jobs that offer the security of a guaranteed paycheck every two weeks, Paid time off, health insurance or other benefits.

And if you see an artist in a restaurant, 95% of the time they are working for tips only or at the most, a fraction of their regular rate. As a rule of thumb, always tip your artists, they are hard working entrepreneurs who will really appreciate it- even if it’s just a few dollars!

We understand that the services we provide are an “extra” or luxury- that does not and should not equate to “free”, however.

Thank you for reading this far and I hope the next time you see an artist, no matter what their profession or chosen medium you show your appreciation for them accordingly.
