The character limitation in our bio could not do justice to THE TREND’S story. Who is THE TREND?
Four High school freshman started playing music together in about 1966. Dave, Dave, Dave and Frank. Really, it was more about four friends, three of whom went to grade school together, playing music at high school and CYO dances. Imagine Holy Angels Academy, Bishop Fallon, Saint Joe’s Collegiate Institute, Amherst Central, Saint Aloysius, All Saints, Saint Bartholomew and Saint Joseph, just to name a few! The dance at SJCI in September 1968 drew 2,800 attendees, an all time record that could never be surpassed with today’s fire capacity restrictions.
The first equipment was a bit on the primitive side. Dave C converted an acoustic into a bass guitar. Silvertone amps from Sears for Dave C and Dave R, and vocals ran through the same amps. Over time, the equipment improved! Dave G had a Kent drum kit, manufactured right in Kenmore. Frank built the first sound systems, two columns with three 12-inch speakers in each, a behemoth for the times. Frank and his Dad also designed and built a portable stage for the drummer that did double duty as an equipment locker. Finally, the band journeyed to Art Kubera’s on Fillmore Avenue, and acquired three Fender guitars!
After high school, guitarist Frank decided to stop his live performing. So, a new band member needed to be recruited. Joe was already acquainted with Dave R (college) and Dave C (high school), and became a close friend and band member.
It wouldn’t be THE TREND without friends making music together.
As years passed and drummer Dave G moved south, Glenn (with a Philharmonic pedigree) and Warner helped THE TREND continue. Performances were intermittent, as careers and families took precedence. Eventually, Dave G returned to Buffalo. And the original TREND was reunited, to the delight of fans and band members. As time passed, Dave G decided to put down the sticks.. With THE TREND having a performance at the Mary Seton Room under their belts, he must’ve thought it was time to leave on a high note!
The search for a new drummer was solved when Joe suggested we might ask Bill to fill that spot. Bill already had a busy schedule as a jazz drummer, with the group My Cousin Tone. However, he liked playing our oldies and we just got along too well to not have him join in.
Bill had a suggestion for a singer and a possible addition to the group. Maybe he heard Dave C complaining about not being able to hit those Roger Daltry notes. More likely, it was an idea to expand our song selections and harmonies. Enter Therese. She has joined this band of friends, continuing the tradition of playing the music we grew up with and never gets old.
THE TREND plays more often these days. In addition to private parties, usual summer dates include The Flying Bison and various venues for Music on Main in Williamsville - The Irishman, Glen Park Tavern, Sorrentino’s, and Lloyd Taco Factory (where we also play throughout the year).
