Memorial Day was observed for decades on May 30 each year, but it was changed by Congress to the last Monday in May in1968.
The change created a 3-day weekend. (My florist mother designed many floral tributes for the Memorial Day observation)

Below is a link to the "Tribute to the Common Solider" which is a very thought-provoking video. It even refers to politicians 😳 and how we perceive them, even today. Well worth the time to listen!

The luxury of a Netherlands hotel shower on the island of Ameland - sauna of warm steam inside the shower 😳

Day 2 on the island of Ameland. Beautiful ferry ride to the island -one of four. Ameland is more a family/ nature watching island while one of the others is young people partying & two more isolated islands.
Staying at the Vanheeckern hotel where all of Joren’s family is staying also. Met Joren’s great parents & two younger sisters of Joren’s (college age). Did some exploring of the shops in the small area of the island, and some resting to adjust to the 6 hour time difference. Then to a wonderful dinner & wine @ Rixt restaurant with a 5 course meal of bruschetta, cold meats, tartar, 3 fish & steak dishes which ended with a fabulous assortment of desserts - lava cake, amaretto cream, tiramisu, vanilla infused ice cream & lemincello- homemade, served family style for 11 of us. A four hour dinner, relaxed & enjoyable visiting.
The language spoken is Dutch with some German, Freizen, & French infusions. All of Joren’s family speak excellent English.
Tomorrow we’ll do sunrise beach walking, paddle boats, & head back on the ferry to Amsterdam in the afternoon. A fun & relaxing day!

Day 1 in Amsterdam. Great flight on Delta. Spent the day with Granddaughter, Kayla Hechtel, who is finishing her MBA in International Business & Hospitality in Amsterdam- an intense 13 month program. Joren, her boyfriend lives here in the Netherlands & was a trooper to pick me up at the airport @ 6 am.
Spent the day in Zaandam, a small village outside of Amsterdam where Kayla’s apartment is - great breakfast & tour of the village on the water. Staying in a lovely Dutch themed hotel & “people watched”who are “decked out” in orange to celebrate the King’s birthday( no problem wearing orange for this Clemson girl🤣)
Tomorrow we head to Ameland Island where Joren’s family are vacationing (car & ferry ) & then back to Amsterdam on the train to our airB&B. I ❤️Amsterdam

Post from a local Beekeeper 🐝
“Its late, and maybe in the morning I'll delete this post, but I've just got home and for now I need to write this down.
Earlier this evening I received a message from a home owner to say they had a swarm of bees in their hedge, but they were worried about them because children had been throwing water at them.
By the time my fellow beekeeper and I arrived, what had been a beautiful prime swarm was reduced to a few hundred drenched bees, huddling limply around their queen.
I've already deleted the photos of the puddles of water, the dripping wet hedge, and the many, many dead and dying bees that hadn't been able to escape the attack; sharing those pictures serves no purpose.
We gently placed the bees that had survived into a collection box, and hopefully tomorrow, when they've had chance to dry out and settle, we'll check on them and if necessary feed them; they'll be exhausted and possibly (understandably) defensive. They've been through a lot.
Please, please, help me to educate your children, your grandchildren, your neices and nephews, your neighbours, your colleagues and your friends that a swarm of bees isn't dangerous - they're amazing creatures that are just looking for a new home.
Please don't let anyone harm them. Just call a beekeeper who will gladly rehome them.
Please help me to spread this message and hopefully save any more bees from being unnecessarily harmed” 😢
