"My parents were married for 55 years. One morning, my Mom was going downstairs to make Mom breakfast, she had a heart attack and fell. My Mother picked her up as best she could and almost dragged her into the truck. At full speed , without respecting traffic lights, she drove her to the hospital.

When they arrived, unfortunately she was no longer with us.

During the funeral, my Mother did not speak; her gaze was lost. She hardly cried. 💔

That night, her children joined her. In an atmosphere of pain and nostalgia, we remembered beautiful anecdotes and she asked my brother, a theologian, to tell him where Mom would be at that moment. My brother began to talk about life after death, and guesses as to how and where she would be.

My Mother listened carefully. Suddenly she asked us to take her to the cemetery.

Mom!" we replied, "it's 11 at night, we can't go to the cemetery right now!"

She raised her voice, and with a glazed look she said:
"Don't argue with me, please don't argue with the woman who just lost her Wife of 55 years."

There was a moment of respectful silence, we didn't argue anymore. We went to the cemetery, we asked the night watchman for permission.

With a flashlight we reached the tomb. My Mother caressed her, prayed and told her children, who watched the scene moved:
"It was 55 years... you know? No one can talk about true love if they have no idea what it's like to share life with their true love."

She paused and wiped her face. "She and I, we were together in that crisis. I changed jobs ..." she continued. "We packed up when we sold the house and moved out of town.

We shared the joy of seeing our children finish their careers, we mourned the departure of loved ones side by side, we prayed together in the waiting room of some hospitals, we support each other in pain, we hug each Christmas, and we forgive our mistakes... I'm happy, do you know why?

Because she left BEFORE me. She didn't have to go through the agony and pain of burying me, of being left alone after my departure. I will be the one to go through that, and I thank God. I loved her so much, that I wouldn't have liked her to suffer..."

When my Mother finished speaking, my brothers and I had tears streaming down our faces. We hugged her, and she comforted us, "It's okay, we can go home, it's been a good day." 🥰

That night I understood what true love is; It is FAR from Romanticism, it does not have much to do with Eroticism, or with s*x, rather it is LINKED to work, to complement, to care and, above all, to the TRUE LOVE that TWO really committed people profess". 💖 💐

🏳️‍🌈 Ruth Coker Burks 🏳️‍🌈
In 1984, when Burks was 25 and a young mother living in Arkansas, she would often visit a hospital to care for a friend who had cancer. During one visit, she noticed the nurses would draw straws, afraid to go into one room, its door sealed by a big red bag. She asked why and the nurses told her the patient had Gay-Related Immune Deficiency (GRID), later known as AIDS.

On a repeat visit, and seeing the big red bag on the door, Burks decided to disregard the warnings and sneaked into the room. In the bed was a skeletal young man, who told her he wanted to see his mother before he died. She left the room and told the nurses, who said, "Honey, his mother’s not coming. He’s been here six weeks. Nobody’s coming”.

Burks called his mother anyway, who refused to come visit her son, who she described as a "sinner" and already dead to her, and that she wouldn't even claim his body when he died. “I went back in his room and when I walked in, he said, "Oh, momma. I knew you’d come", and then he lifted his hand. And what was I going to do? So I took his hand. I said, "I’m here, honey. I’m here”, Burks later recounted.

She pulled a chair to his bedside, talked to him, and held his hand until he died 13 hours later. After finally finding a funeral home that would his body, and paying for the cremation out of her own savings, Burks buried his ashes on her family's large plot in Files Cemetery.

After this first encounter, Burks cared for other patients who needed her help. She would take them to appointments, obtain medications, apply for assistance, and even kept supplies of AIDS medications on hand, as some pharmacies would not carry them. Burks work soon became well known in the city and she received financial assistance from gay bars, "They would twirl up a drag show on Saturday night and here'd come the money... That's how we'd buy medicine, that's how we'd pay rent. If it hadn't been for the drag queens, I don't know what we would have done", she said.

Over the next 30 years (with assistance from her daughter) Burks cared for over 1,000 people and buried more than 40 on her family's plot (most of whom were gay men whose families would not claim their ashes). For this, she has been nicknamed the 'Cemetery Angel'.
