My second husband (Jimmy) and I had a "backyard wedding" 10 years ago with our 3 combined children (Tommy, Ria & Nicholas) and our 1 "adopted son - Omar - Tommy's best friend who happens to be my best friend's son) and a Paster we found on Rent-a-Rev.com. Tommy (age 18) walked me down the hallway to the fireplace, Ria (age 15) was my maid of honor, Nicholas (age 10) was Jimmy's best man. Omar (age 18) was our official photographer and of course Rent-a-Rev was our officiant. Clearly, we are a blended family and we were planning a family trip to Montana to take Tommy out to the University of Montana to start his freshman year at the school of journalism. We decided that we wanted to make this 15 day blended family trip as an official blended family thus planning a "back yard" wedding in 24 hours. The July 8, 2010, blazing Chicago heat of 99 degrees with the heat index of 103 degrees changed our "back yard" by the roses wedding into an inside in front of the fireplace wedding. We celebrated after with a champagne toast for us and the Rev and sparkling lemonade for the kids. We didn't think of this as any kind of social distancing type of situation 10 years ago.
Fast forward to the summer of 2020 and our oldest son Tommy and his fiance' Marley who got engaged just before the New Year of 2020 found themselves in a very different wedding planning mode. They had been together 3 years. Tommy is now a photojournalist and in the fall moved from a staff photographer with the Missoula Newspaper to a staff photographer with the University of Montana, talk about full circle! Marley, also a graduate of the, University of Montana, is now a Respiratory Therapist with the Community Medical Center in Missoula, Montana. They had originally planned a Summer destination wedding in Mexico for 25, still small, but requiring having friends & family fly in from all over the country. COVID-19 changed everything. They decided against this for the safety and well being of those invited and those they would come in contact with after returning from the wedding. They decided to have a simple elopement type of wedding but still wanted something romantic. They ended up going to Whitefish, MT, and riding up the "Rode to the Sun" with best friend/brother Omar as the officiant/best man, Marley's best friend Abbie as the maid of honor and fellow photojournalist, friend/fellow graduate/classmate of Tommy's, Hunter as the photographer! It was beautiful, unique and simply romantic!
