The Texas State Bison Music Festival is an all-day music event featuring some of Texas’ greatest Americana and Texas country music artists. The festival will include arts and craft vendors, food vendors and more! The music fest will begin around 3 pm and will last until after dark while the arts and crafts will open at 10 am. This year’s event is being held to raise funds to help restore the Texas State Bison Herd to their historic range at Caprock Canyon State Park and allow visitors the chance to celebrate cultural and natural history of the Panhandle. Caprock Canyons State Park is a 14,000 acre park with the potential to support a wide diversity of plant and animal communities. The park is home to the Official Bison Herd of the state of Texas, the last remaining example of the Great Southern herd. The descendants of this Texas herd were brought back from the brink of extinction by famed Cattleman Charles Goodnight and his wife Mary Ann in the canyons surrounding the Caprock Escarpment of the Texas Panhandle during the height of the infamous bison slaughter in 1878. At one time, there were 30 to 60 million bison roaming North America but by 1895, there were a mere 541 animals remaining on the planet. The Texas State Bison Herd and its historic bison landscape in Caprock Canyons State Park is a key component, working in conjunction with other conservation partners, in conserving the species of Plains Bison. Caprock Canyons State Park has developed an aggressive management plan to restore the park landscape and it’s wildlife to its natural state that would have existed prior to European settlement.
