When I design lighting, I usually work on weddings and corporate events, where I love creating a subdued and atmospheric vibe.
But every now and then, I get the chance to shake things up and do something a bit out of the ordinary!
This year was the second time @midwestdjslive invited me to handle the lighting for their nightlife events at the conference. I had this fun concept in mind from last year, but we didn’t get to use it back then. It was such a thrill to finally bring it to life this year!
The venue is a bit of a blank slate, which is exciting, but it also comes with its own set of challenges. With a lot of glass and a circular layout, I knew I had to get creative and not just rely on uplighting.
Plus, the room has low ceilings, so we couldn’t go too high with our lights. I decided to use pixel tubes in the ceiling for a cool effect. We placed intelligent moving heads off to the sides and added uplighting on the solid walls that faced the windows.
To add a touch of warmth and some nice wash light for the DJs, I included pin spots in the design. I controlled everything with the ADJ WolfMix, and it all came together beautifully!

Shoutout to all my seasoned DJs and wedding pros out there!
Let’s talk about staying relevant in the DJ scene—especially as we’re all (let’s admit it) not getting any younger. Keeping your finger on the pulse is crucial, particularly if you want to connect with younger clients.
Sure, we know the basics: listen to new music, scroll through Spotify, and keep an eye on the charts. But what about those deeper industry trends? Here are my top three strategies to help you stay ahead of the game:
1. **Hit Up Industry Conferences**: Seriously, DJ conferences have been game-changers for my career! The education, resources, networking, and friendships you can forge at these events are invaluable. I still remember my first conference—I felt like a deer in headlights, clueless and alone. But that experience opened the door to lifelong bonds, and now I often find myself on stage instead of sitting in the audience. Curious? Join me at @harvestofsound this December and the @pittsburghdjsummit in January!
2. **Broaden Your Gig Horizons**: Don’t just stick to weddings and private events! Dive into bar gigs, restaurant gigs, and club gigs. These experiences offer unique challenges that keep your skills sharp and your music fresh. Plus, you never know what new opportunities might come your way!
3. **Get Connected with Local Networking Groups**: In Boston, for instance, DJs like @djartiev host incredible quarterly meetups, and we also have umbrella groups like @wipa_org and @ileahq. These gatherings are fantastic for expanding your circle, meeting others in the event industry, and boosting your business.
**Bonus Tip**: Embrace YouTube! We’re in a video-driven world where online learning reigns supreme. If you can’t find it on YouTube, it’s probably not worth your time. Just keep an eye out for the questionable content too!
Let’s keep pushing the envelope and staying fresh in this ever-evolving industry!

🌸 🪩 Spring kicked off this weekend in pink, glam style! @the.koji.club_ Cherry Blossom Disco has been one of my favorite events to participate in in the past few years.
This year we danced, partied and drank amazing Sake under the disco ball.
I love being given the creative freedom to do my thing for this party. We upped lighting game even more this year, adding tons of pinspots to highlight multiple bard, florals and food vendors.
Musically we are always trying to keep a disco vibe while keeping the music fresh. During VIP hour we kept it chill and funky. As doors opened for the main event we shifted more upbeat and added in some disco classics and remixes.
As we got deeper in the evening we kept the disco vibes, and brought in disco style remixes of current pop while also looking to bring in more house, along with anything the had, disco horns, piano and strings.
As we moved closer to the end of the night we went in to 90s Dance and ended closed out the night with Alex Newell's Kill The Lights. (Actually we had 2 encore songs... but I guess you had to be there 🤷♂️)

Get in deeper conversations about music
Music is so much more than just the songs we love to listen and dance to. By getting in deep and understanding what makes people tick musically – what they listen to during their workout or their all-time favorite songs – we can create truly unique experiences that our clients won’t forget.
