You honor me by anointing my head with oil. My cup overflows with blessings. Psalm 23:5
David’s younger wilderness seasons prepared him for promotion. He learned to embrace courage and to rely on the Lord’s provision. He also learned how to guard what the Lord had entrusted to him when an enemy preyed upon his territory. We must learn these things as well. That’s why we have a Shepherd, one who cares for us always. He steers us away from evil, to places of rest and restoration. He leads us off the overused pathways to roads where truth and righteousness remind us who we are to Him. The closer we follow Him, the more we rely on Him until our heart beats in rhythm with His. Over time, we’re transformed into the royal heirs we were always meant to be. In the face our enemy, He claims us as His own. He stands by us, continually pours out fresh anointing on us, and equips us for battle. From preparation to promotion, from the valley of the shadow to the mountain where His sun shines, in the face of enemy attack and around the victory table of celebration, we will always have all that we need. We, like David, will one day look back over our lives and declare that we never—not for a moment—lacked any good thing because God’s goodness and mercy followed us every step of the way.
