What a fun afternoon, starting it off in a patriotic mood…
When entertaining seniors at the South Jersey Shore, you always have to have a mummers song ready to fire off when asking “How many of you grew up in Philadelphia”…
What a fun wedding last night, celebrating with Paul and Paola at the beautiful Tomasello Winery. This wedding was more of an intimate celebration of family and close friends. As a professional reading the room, I recognized early on that precision programming to this audience would be particularly paramount.
There were many older family members and no real concentration of a specific younger generation present. It certainly wasn’t a hip hop or rock crowd as the general range was 40-80 with a strong second generation Italian and Latin presence.
Lots of holiday cheer was spiced in to set the mood and we played some classic Italian and Salsa favorites that went over well. One thing that immediately stood out was the fact that a few couples really knew how to dance, with obvious ballroom dancing skills. Sensing this, I tested the water during dinner and it was one of the highlight sets of the night.
In The Mood between courses brought out the jitterbug couples, followed by Mack The Knife, Rock Around the Clock and then a slower ballroom feel. Sabor A Mi, some rumba and samba beats and this audience within an audience was having a blast, showing off their dance skills.
Recognizing your audience is one of the most important aspects of a DJs responsibility, yet so many inexperienced DJs would have totally missed the mark last night.
All DJs are not alike. Many have limited knowledge as self-proclaimed “wedding DJs”, but in reality, they only understand the bar or club culture and hit every crowd with the same “in your face” hype-MC and club vibe when a more elegant approach is needed. Then when the celebration falls flat, they chalk it off to being a “lame crowd”. There aren’t as many lame crowds as there are incompetent DJs with narrow skill sets.
Choose wisely on one of the most important celebrations of a lifetime!
When it comes to a micro-wedding, as was the case tonight with just 26 guests, experience truly matters more than ever. The intuition of a seasoned professional will help read the crowd quickly and make every song selection count.
Tonight’s client understood the value of hiring a professional and it was a pleasure handling their ceremony sound and reception entertainment, creating lifetime memories. Many prospects feel that it’s only “x” number of people, so we’ll just hire someone starting out or someone working part-time on the side to save money. What they’ll never know is how great their celebration COULD have been.
A novice has a much better chance of getting by with 200+ guests. No matter what he or she plays, someone will likely dance to it in a full, packed ballroom. It’s not as easy with just 20-30 guests in an intimate setting. This is where a true professional shines… Setting the mood through precise programming and taking the energy to the next level.
I’d say this small group of friends was having a great time tonight!
