Here I show you how I salvaged these KA’s Rosie Jo that had almost entirely rotted!
.
Dahlias are pretty incredible and actually hard to kill. 😃
Fubuki Maroon has been a long long longtime favorite! Prolific bloomer, beautiful bushy plant and great tuber producer. Coloring can range across a season from deep maroon to more magenta. Still up on the website but if y’all don’t take it all I am truly so happy to keep them for myself 🤣
.
Also shown here is Ivanetti (ball) but it’s sold out. Last year was my first time growing it and I just didn’t have a lot of tubers from dividing these.
Here’s a clump of Colorado Classic, two days after being brought out of winter storage and having had the dirt washed off. As you can see from the most obvious eye, it’s eager to grow!
.
When a variety is said to be a good tuber producer, it pretty much looks like this. I stated in this vid that this clump looked to have approximately 8 tubers but once I divided, I actually got 10!
.
Importantly, you’ll see here what a broken neck on a tuber looks like. If your tuber has a broken neck like this one, it’s not viable. In the video I stated that this is normal—what I meant was that it’s normal to get some breakage at some point in lifting or storing. But it’s not normal to receive a tuber with a broken neck from a supplier. It won’t grow, so definitely return that.
.
As for spotting dormant eyes, this clump is super beginner-level easy because Colorado Classic is just inherently a very eager variety. I let this clump sit at 70 degrees for two days after washing so I could show you the eyes. Some stubborn varieties require soil for a few weeks at 70 degrees in order to come out of dormancy. Penhill Watermelon and Hamari Gold are two varieties in particular that don’t eye up well for me in dormancy.
It’s safe to say that I’m done adding new varieties for this year! I felt I needed a few more pinks and peaches (my all-time fave color of dahlias) and a few more oranges and purples.
.
As a personal preference, I don’t care much for yellow. I bought polventum supreme (not pictured here, just to see if I like it). I have only four staple white varieties that I will grow and don’t want more than that. And reds? I probably need more but I have to stop here….there’s always next year!
These arrived today!
Cuttings from @stonehousedahlias of the varieties created by @santacruzdahlias … KA’s Champagne, Mocha Katie, Mocha Maya and Cafe Mauve.
This is my fifth year ordering from Stonehouse. I already have KA’s Rosie Jo which I bought from them last season.
To say that I’m excited is an understatement!
Photos: not mine…
Video: all minesssssss
Look at the petal count on this lacinated variety called Mystril! I don’t have very many lacjnated varieties because the vase life isn’t great but they sure are worth it!
Missing the sounds of insects and birds right about now, as we struggle through this cold spell. Here’s a little reminder that the heat of summer will return. And if anything helps me, it’s the thought that this cold is killing off the mosquitoes and pests that plagued me last year. 💪🏽👏🏽🥶🤗
The bees are hard at work in the Castle Drive today. ❤️ Should we see what beautiful little seedlings come from these?
Cannot wait to see what beautiful images @shutterandbloom captures here this weekend! If you want a session, contact her ASAP!
I accidentally broke this bloom while popping the organza bags off the other night so just thought I would get a quick vid of the amazing colors! Sorry for the sound… it was a particularly rowdy evening for the neighbors 🤷🏼♀️ and I have just learned not to look over at them. I am pretty sure I accidentally scarred them for life in some spanx before my photo shoot w @shutterandbloom so I think we’re even! 😂 😵💫👻
It’s fall break and my girl ACTUALLY asked me to go hiking 🥾🥰💪🏽. I guess I’m doing something right! (As we are headed out the door she goes for one last primp session in the mirror though 🤦🏼♀️). So yes! Hitting the #bereapinnacles and then rewarding ourselves with baked spaghetti from @papalenos , then gymnastics and grabbing some stuff for our session with @shutterandbloom !!! We were supposed to be shooting on Saturday but it’s going to rain and be cold so she was so awesome and gave us an earlier night! Thanks Jessica!

Keeping the field as FULL as possible this week for our photos!!!
Mystral 😍. Got this one from Zach & Eli Dahlias but I can’t find it in a database anywhere so it may not be registered. Similar in form to Pineland’s Princess. I have never really wanted to grow lacinated petals but now I must have a few more for next year!
Rock Run Elva! She’s new to me this year and I am so smitten! Blooms have this slight blush center. I’m imagining it with a blush and nude Sweet Natalie… okay, must have these side by side! Pic to come!
.
This is why it takes me weeks to tag my plants! 😂
.
Sweet Natalie 🥰
.
Sometimes blush, sometimes pink, sometimes just not sure where she wants to be on the color scale that particular day!
Penhill Watermelon 🍉 . Her name should be “FINALLY “ 😂
