Want your business to be the top-listed Event Planning Service?
Stu & His Crew started out in 1979 as a collaboration between aspiring DJ Stu Chisholm and his partner/mentor, Gary Merkel, himself an avid music afficionado, collector and DJ, under the banner of "Gary & Stu." When Gary was forced to retire due to health issues, Stu wanted to continue the personality-driven essense of what the collaboration was known for. Unsure of who, if anyone, he might be working with in the future, Stu took inspiration from various Detroit radio fixtures such as "Purtan's People" and WRIF's "JJ & The Morning Crew" and rebranded his DJ service "Stu & His Crew." Later, to distinguish himself from the sea of amateurs that saturated the market, Stu added "Professional DJ Service" to the legal name. Not content to simply do weddings, Stu began seeking out radio, bar and nightclub work in the mid-1980s. In 1984, Stu interned at Detroit FM rock powerhouse, WRIF, distinguishing himself as "the night intern," sitting-in on the popular freeform show, "The 'Riff Rock Cafe." He also joined the team that was refurbishing the legendary Macomb County AM daytimer, WBRB, originally coming in as air staff and then moving into the engineering team when it was discovered that the station had massive technical issues that delayed its relaunch by nearly a year. Stu prepped the stations Master Control studio, organized the music library and worked in the field to gather the data necessary for FCC certification. Stu also cut the first promos for the station. Alas, a change of management forced Stu to part company with WBRB just before it actually got back on the air. At about the same time, Stu landed a DJ slot at the popular Macomb County hotspot, C.J. Barrymore's, and from there to several stops in the metro and suburban Detroit club scene, including the Landsdowne (a.k.a. Baja Beach Club), The Ritz/Studebaker's/New York, New York, Confetti's, Liberty Park of America and a long-time run at the infamous Wooly Bully's in Macomb County. Stu still occasionally turns up when "duty calls." The main events of Stu & His Crew have been wedding receptions, and Stu has been instrumental in establishing some of what are now considered "industry standards." Always the innovator, Stu began wearing tuxedos when other DJs still showed up in jeans and tour shirts; Stu incorporated radio-style production into his performances, using samples, sound effects and drops; Stu was one of the area's first DJs to use a computer database for more than just finding music, but to assemble his music into coherent sets; and in 1996, Stu began incorporating the methods of professional movers in order to deliver his entertainment packages to various events by obtaining a ramp and rail equipped moving van, which has since become a symbol of his company. (He's well known for adopting the methods of other professions into his DJ business.) In 2014, Stu & His Crew was absorbed into the SAHC Group, bringing new minds/collaborators into the mix and bundling together all of the various entertainment, production, publishing and educational pursuits that Stu started. With Stu still the anchor of these endeavors, the collaboration has resulted in a total overhaul of the company, now known as Stu & His Crew LLC: A Professional DJ Service, able to deliver more, even higher-quality entertainment than ever before!
