JAZZ AT MEADE (JAM), with support from Yellow Door Concert Series, welcomes Jazz Vocalist Becky Livas on Sunday July 17, 2022, 4pm until 6pm.

Becky established her "jazz cabaret" reputation with duos, trios, small combos and two big bands. She has performed in New York, Baltimore, and Las Vegas as well as long standing runs all over Southeastern Virginia. From lead singer with the 1920s style Hotel Paradise Roof Garden Orchestra, she formed a combo called Just Beyond Paradise of which two original members, Rick Eldridge and Rick Jebavy will perform with her on July 17th.

Becky was mentored and performed arrangements written by the late, great saxophonist, composer and band leader Frank Foster who is famous for his frequent collaborations with Count Basie. Foster wrote in liner notes for her first CD "no one with any degree of taste and discernment can justifiably ignore pure musicality, near flawless intonation nor interpretive integrity, all of which Ms. Livas has at her fingertips in ample supply."

JAZZ AT MEADE (JAM), with support from Yellow Door Concert Series, welcomes back The Tim Whalen Quintet on Sunday June 26, 2022.
Milwaukee native Tim Whalen is an in-demand jazz pianist / composer / arranger living in Washington DC. He has played all over the United States, Japan and Europe in many different musical situations, and has written music for everything from jazz trios to symphony orchestras. In 2005, he orchestrated music for the Oscar – winning song, “El Otro Lado del Rio” by Jorge Drexler from the film The Motorcycle Diaries.

He has performed with David “Fathead” Newman, Wynton Marsalis, Terrell Stafford, Ambrose Akinmusire, Jon Hendricks, Vic Juris, Richard Davis, Dennis Irwin, Barry Ries, Clyde Stubblefield, Jackie Allen, Ben Sidran, Marcus Belgrave, Andy Martin and others. He’s currently staying busy with his Quintet and is writing new music for a new chamber jazz ensemble he‘s formed.

Tim’s latest project is a new web series he created, hosts, and produces called “AceTone Sessions,” which features the many amazing musicians in the Washington DC area.

Tim will be joined by Tedd Baker on saxophones, Michael Kramer on guitar, Zack Pride on bass, and Lenny Robinson on drums.

Meade Memorial Episcopal Church is delighted to announce our partnership with Yellow Door Concert Series as they come together to relaunch JAZZ AT MEADE (JAM). This new found friendship will not change the incredible tradition established by the Jazz at Meade Committee, but hopes to create greater reach through the Alexandria Community and beyond.

For those of you who are unfamiliar with Yellow Door Concert Series (YDCS), it was founded in 2018 by Alexandria musicians, Robyn and Vaughn Ambrose. YDCS mission is to bring communities together to experience live art music in a way that is a look back in time, to the parlor concerts of the early 20th century.

Together we are excited to announce the first JAM concert since 2019, featuring the Vaughn Ambrose Quartet on Sunday May 15, 2022 from 4 to 6 pm. The concert will follow our normal format with two 45 minute sets with a meet and greet and refreshment pause between the 2 sets. There are now two ways you can join us for the show: either in person (limited seating) or virtually via zoom performance link. Masks and proof of vaccination will be required for in person attendance.
