Halloween originated with my ancestors, after all, as Samhain. They believed that at Samhain the souls of those who had died during the past year traveled into the otherworld. Samain became the Halloween we are familiar with when the Catholic Church attempted to change the religious practices of the Celtic people. The Church decided to use November 1st as All Saints Day, also known as All Hallows Day (hallowed meaning holy). 🎃
The Celts had a hard time changing their deeply held beliefs of the traveling dead to the new feast that honored saints. The evening before became known as All Hallows Eve, and this was when the celebrations happened. They continued to celebrate All Hallows Eve as a time of the wandering dead along with wandering fairies, witches and demons. They appeased the spirits and the celebrants (who would often wear masks depicting these spirits) by setting out gifts of food and drink. Over time, these beliefs migrated everywhere, and people began dressing up in costumes in exchange for food and drink. This is how we got “Trick or Treat.” All Hallows Eve became Hallow Evening, which became shortened even more to Hallowe-e’en. 👻
