My entire career in architectural photography has been defined by culture shock. When first I took this job in June of 2018, I was still living in WV, having quite a rough go of trying to make it full time as a creative. I was lost creatively, frustrated occupationally, and broken financially. My first few weeks were a whirlwind of information and learning how to navigate a city that was very new to me. While I wasn’t working in DC proper right off the bat, places like Bethesda and the rest of Montgomery County were quite an adjustment for my small town mind. A faster paced version of life I only dreamt of as a teenager, was surely becoming a reality. Whether I knew it or not.
It wasn’t until that August, during my first shoot here, when it really hit me. Where I was, what I was doing, how I got there, and how much fun I was having all sunk in at the same time, at the exact moment I saw this composition. I remember walking out of the garage, raising my camera in the same spot you’re seeing now and thought “I made it”.
Almost 6 years later and I still find myself in awe of where my camera takes me, and how wonderful the world can look through a lens.
