I have been a wedding officiant and celebrant for over ten years. I learned so much from the first wedding I officiated way back in Scranton, PA. I was nervous had no real experience and blew it in a few different ways. When I say I blew it I don't mean that it was not beautiful and carried all
the elements of a wedding ceremony. It was my first and so what
did I know? I studied at the Celebrant Foundation and Institute for ceremonies: weddings, funerals, healing ceremonies, and first just plain ceremonies. They taught us so much, but I had never stood up before a wedding couple, their guests, and their wedding party. I was shaking and I truly had my doubts as to how it may go. I was not relaxed, joyful, or inviting it was a script out of my notebook with all the right words but it lacked its spontaneity, calmness, and complete feeling of joy. It is not a wedding I am proud I officiated. The review was not great either!

I am telling you this because I now know what a great wedding ceremony is. I now know what it takes and only through practice and being willing to study more, ask for guidance, and glean in on others did I learn not only how to be good but great. I never knew how to connect with the guests, create a ceremony the couple would be wild about, to relax the couple let alone myself, engage everyone at the ceremony, and love what I do. I am a great officiant because I listen to the bride and groom, the guests, and the vendors. It is like creating a fine symphony where everyone plays in harmony with each other. It's about creating the perfect ceremony for the couple, engaging the guests to play a part in the ceremony, getting everyone excited and in their hearts, and finding the right balance between joy, seriousness, laughter, and romance.

I know from my ten-year experience it takes practice, insight, mentors, resources, references, and most of all commitment to creating a ceremony that comes from the heart whether silly, fun, serious, or romantic.

So please truly weigh in on the pros and cons of hiring a professional or an amateur. It can make a huge difference on your wedding day. Please call me before you give the job to an unprofessional. I do not know how to cut hair so therefore I would never cut someone else's.
