Each winter a deep cold settles in the largest alpine valley in the world, where an iconic river flows. Alamosa, Colorado sets in the low point of the San Luis Valley and is often the coldest spot in the nation. Although that sounds miserable, it is also one of the sunniest places in America and dryness in the air keeps the cold from penetrating like it does in humid places. The cold creates beauty. It provides unique experiences. The Rio Frio Ice Fest lets you take advantage of its wonder.
Where else could you run or walk down the middle of a winding, scenic river? The Rio Frio 5K on Ice is one of the premier events of the Rio Frio Ice Fest. Most every year a thick layer of ice allows the entire course to be on the frozen river. In 2018, during one of the warmest years on record, the lake at nearby Blanca Vista Park still froze so that 2/3 of the course could be on ice. Blanca Vista Park is also the site of the Rio Frio Ice Fest’s Ice Carousel and Polar Plunge. While the plunge is self explanatory, the ice carousel is an idea found in Finland where a large circle of ice is cut and then powered by a motor to give people a merry ride.
Downtown Alamosa is where the rest of the Rio Frio Ice Fest takes place. Watch professional ice carvers create sculpture according to the annual theme. Kids can take part in a costume contest and meet famous characters. You can get free hot drinks and treats at retail stores that also hold specials. The afternoon Grub n Pub tour of downtown restaurants and pubs always sells out. The day is capped off with a Bonfire in Ice at San Juan Ave & Main St, which is also where you can get the best information for the whole festival.
Join us the last weekend each January for a memorable time for you, your friends and family!
