Who says bark can't be interesting? ✨

The Exclamation! London Planetree is here to prove them wrong. If its energetic name wasn't enough to catch your interest, this tree's bark will! A beautiful mottled silver and brown that peels as the tree matures to reveal colorful patches underneath, this tree is eye-catching even in the heart of winter when its leaves are gone. Don't count it out during the warmer months though, the fascinating bark stays year-round plus with a mature size of 60 feet tall by 45 feet wide and lifespan of 100 years, it'll provide plenty of shade for generations to come. Be sure to give it the space it needs and full sun, but otherwise this tree is content in just about any watering or soil condition, including urban plantings and some environmental salt. Evergreen, interesting, and native to the Sierras, this plant is one to look out for 💚

The Pinemat Manzanita may be an overlooked option as far as shrubs go, but we believe it deserves your attention! Not only is this shrub evergreen and an excellent groundcover, it's also native to our region and more showy than it may first appear. These plants have incredible bark that's a deep red when mature that then peels back in scroll-like curls to reveal orange fresh bark underneath. This process is a natural defense mechanism against pests and disease, as bark that regularly peels off is difficult to get a foothold on for bugs, fungus, and the like, plus the bark is super smooth, leaving nothing for insect invaders to grab onto. Manzanitas are also known for being cool to the touch during the warmer months thanks to this specialized bark. While they don't actually run any colder than your standard shrub, because there's more flat surface for your hand to touch you can feel the cool water inside the plant easier, making for a fun party trick or an interesting way to cool off if you see it while hiking the trails. As far as your landscaping goes, this plant also has clusters of small bell-shaped white flowers that bees will shake in order to get the pollen out of, those aforementioned evergreen leaves, and a low-growing mound shape that makes it great for erosion control, adding interest to rock gardens, or any groundcover purpose you need it for. Don't sleep on this little shrub, give it a chance to let it shine in your garden! 🌟
