How shotgun shooters with 'both-eyes-open' challenges suddenly smoke more clays without spending tons on ammo.
As a neurology based fi****ms instructor of instructors, I see this myth a lot.
The idea that training harder and more often is the only way to improve.
Grinding out tons of reps is an answer, but it's not the best answer.
There's an easier way.
A more effective way.
And it comes from an unexpected source.
High stress tactical shooting where patches and squinting aren't an option.
Something strange happened when our shooters shot trap & s***t after the training....
Yes, it had a fast, dramatic impact on both-eyes-open pistol shooting.
But I wasn't prepared for all of the people contacting me to tell me how they'd struggled shooting shotgun with both eyes open and were FINALLY shooting perfect 25s when they used the drills I taught them.
At first I dismissed it.
And when I finally dug into it, it made perfect sense.
Both depend on a perfect presentation that automatically lines up the muzzle.
But there are a few things that can make this challenging.
First off, most eye dominance testing only tells us whether we're right or left eye dominant...but there are 4 types of visual dominance that are important to shotgun sports.
If you're only testing for right and left dominance, you don't know whether or not you need to stabilize dominance to 1 eye...let alone how to do it quickly and easily.
Second, many shooters' eyes don't point EXACTLY where they're looking and some eyes don't move at the same speed. These alignment and coordination issues causes shooters to take too long to lock onto clays, misjudge distance and/or hit WAY worse when swinging in one direction than another.
This is just the tip of the iceberg of what we call "Training from the neck up."
You see, most training focuses on technique from the neck down.
But 80% of shooting is mental and visual...above the neck.
And that's where I come in. As a neurology based coach, I show shooters how to quickly and easily take care of the most important parts of shooting--the stuff above the neck.
They include:
-Frustration with both-eyes-open shooting
-Rapid and accurate tracking in both directions
-Picking up targets faster, whether singles or doubles
-Eliminating flinch
