Well, I’m sad to say I had to dig up a big, beautiful golden currant bush. I planted it about three years ago and it’s been doing well. Unfortunately, I found out it can be a host plant for white pine blister rust. We have two nice stands of white pine that I would hate to see get infected. Those trees planted about 20 years ago are probably rust resistant, but I hate to take that chance.

We got our first frost last night that just nipped the basil, so today we harvested as much as we could- just in case. Basil, zucchini, tomatoes, chili peppers, butternut squash and pumpkins. We also had a special helper to harvest potatoes. It’s always exciting to see what you worked for all summer.

I’ve been absent lately. We took a little vacation before heading into the busy dig and divide peony season. One of my favorite things to do while in another town is visit their local farmers market. It’s always a great way to experience the local ag community and see what people are growing. Santa Fe’s market is small but full of vibrant colors and charm!

Good morning from the farm! It’s going to be a beautiful day. Working on getting weeding done in anticipation of fall cleanup. It’s a big job cutting back all the peonies. I’ll also be digging and dividing some. I will likely have Red Charm and Coral Charm roots available for purchase in a few weeks. Let me know if you’d like to pre-order.

I’m not a fan of winter anymore, but with all that’s been happening lately I’m about ready for it! We’ve had a horrible rodent year. Mice, rabbits, some ground squirrel critters that are eating my plants, porcupines and last night, just as we are heading to bed, Ranger barks and runs out the doggie door. Seconds later he comes back in and had been sprayed by a skunk! Arrrgggh! I’m afraid to ask “What’s next?”

This is a garden just for myself- for rest, for contemplation and for prayer! I do harvest a few zinnias and snaps out of it but it’s mostly just to enjoy. The fence was railing at our church in Colfax that was scrapped after a remodel. I love repurposing old items!

What fun it was to provide flowers for this farm to table dinner at Big Canyon Acres! Since peonies are not in season, I used dried peonies along with fresh annuals and herbs. They went beautifully with the fresh, local food provided by My Chef Steph, LLC and the local wine from Rivaura. Everything was delicious and such a beautiful place. Big Canyon Acres has two more farm to table dinners this fall. Be sure to check them out!

Don’t you just love Hollyhocks? A little piece of childhood comes back when you see its blooms. Billed as “black”, I would consider this more of a dark red velvet. It doesn’t make a good cut flower, but it’s beautiful in the garden.

Thank you to everyone who stopped by the Peony Pop Up today! Loved getting to visit and we raised nearly $200 for the Navajo Brethren in Christ Mission! Thanks to our host for letting us come hang out. They have some wonderful things in there. I left with some delicious chocolate milk and a fun little game for my grand daughters. Make sure you stop by and explore all they have to offer!

I did it! I made Peony jelly! It’s clear, beautiful and has a sweet, but slightly tart flavor. It’s quite lovely- not “flowery” at all!

Come celebrate the end of peony season with me this Thursday in Colfax. All proceeds will go to the Navajo BIC Mission in Bloomfield, NM. They recently had some devastating flooding due to heavy rains that damaged roofs and other structures. Get a little touch of spring and support a great cause!

Morning harvest- once harvest starts it goes fast! We have to cut 3 or 4 times a day. Hard to believe the season will be over in just a few weeks! Be sure you get some stems while you can!
