As nonprofits begin to strategize how 2025 (and beyond) will best serve their mission, I am encouraging them to resist the temptation to scale back and cut budgets for events. Instead, building community and capacity will extend their reach when done thoughtfully and skillfully.

Gathering will continue to be impactful. Building community is something nonprofits already do well. NOW it's time to maximize that superpower!

Thank you, New Jersey Center for Nonprofits, for featuring my presentation Eventful: Navigating Trends in Nonprofit Event Design at this year's "The Road Ahead" conference. And thank you TAPinto Flemington and Raritan for the conference recap and photo of me in action!

While preparing a presentation and writing about event accessibility, we wondered about the iterations of the terms "disabled", "differently-abled", and "people with disabilities". Is there is a preference. This article taught us a whole lot real quick! It's worth the read! https://www.betterup.com/blog/differently-abled

Terms like “differently abled” do more harm than good. Here’s why you shouldn’t use them, and what to say instead.

can make or break a conference attendee’s experience. The goal is a warm, friendly, organized, and smoooooth check-in process. Even when the event reg is low tech, it’s gotta be on point.

I get my badge supplies from pc/nametag and their templates for “standard” badge stock works well. They even provide comprehensive mail-merge instructions so you can merge your badge info from an Excel document to Word. Before you print, there’s an opportunity to clean up any formatting errors, too.

I grabbed the badge cases from a company called Thyle on . They’re sturdy and will help me avoid what happened last time…

I had badges in alpha order in a box. 🙄 I knocked against something and the badges hit the floor. 😂😂

I organize my badges in Alpha order by first name. It’s just easier, even when you have three Jennifers. Surnames can be challenging. The first name’s font size is large since it’s the first thing attendees call each other when they meet. The company name smaller. If I can help it, those are the only things I put on a badge.

These badges are for a group of 100 for a breakfast social. They’re a happy bunch and I look forward to their arrival!

Early in my professional career I learned of the value chambers of commerce bring to industry and community. COCs piqued my interest and opportunities to connect in beneficial ways was attractive.

Whelp! All these years later I am excited to share that Nance Communications, Meetings + Events holds its first chamber of commerce membership! Thank you Morris County Chamber of Commerce (NJ) for the warm welcome. Let's do some great work together! 👍🏽 -Lauren Nance, CEO + Chief Consultant-NCM+E

Meetings are events. Events are meetings.

Meetings require the logistical savvy and detail work needed to produce an excellent event.

Events bring together people focused on a common care or occasion.

Today’s project: Preparing for an orientation meeting for a nonprofit’s new trustees. Curation is everything and having the right documents in front of new trustees is key.

The right kind of meeting and atmosphere also sets the tone for this group.

The orientation is only 90 minutes, includes a light but satisfying upscale lunch, and the meeting space is as gorgeous as it is historic.

Their orientation materials were carefully selected so they would provide a proper foundation for the trustee’s service with the organization. From bylaws to a copy of the trustee job description sends the right message from Day 1.

Want to talk about your next board meeting, retreat, or other event? Let us know how we can assist.

Q: What is the preferred length of a bio for an event?

A: Have 3 ready at all times. Be sure to send all three to the event owner. That way, they can use the version(s) they need:

*3 sentences
*1 paragraph (about 5 sentences)
*1 page (with margins 1in to .8in, single spaced)

ON CONSUMPTION =
Event owner only pays for what's consumed. Used most for canned soft drinks and bagged snacks.
