A Long Overdue Farm Update for you:

For everything there is a season, a time for every activity under heaven. A time to be born and a time to die. A time to plant and a time to harvest. A time to kill and a time to heal. A time to tear down and a time to build up. A time to cry and a time to laugh. A time to grieve and a time to dance. A time to scatter stones and a time to gather stones. A time to embrace and a time to turn away. A time to search and a time to quit searching. A time to keep and a time to throw away. A time to tear and a time to mend. A time to be quiet and a time to speak. A time to love and a time to hate. A time for war and a time for peace.
Ecclesiastes 3:1-8

We have prayed, planned, learned, failed, succeeded, cried, laughed and the harvest was abundant and more than just flowers here at Fifth Season Farm. We have had the privilege to meet, rejoice and grieve with so many; through flowers. Our own relationships were strengthened and roots deepened throughout our growing seasons here at our Weatherford Farm. Our flowers have traveled and blessed many in other states and right here at home and we have been so honored to look upon and be a part of all that the Lord has done.

We were faced with a different challenge as we were literally planting for our 2022 spring harvest, in late summer of 2021. As we were planting, Chelsea had her first seizure-like episode out in the field and it was a scary unknown to say the least. She had another in her home, as she was already in the process of undergoing many tests to find out what was going on. She wasn’t able to drive for many months and consistently driving out to the farm was not feasible. Chelsea has not had more episodes, thank the Lord, and tests came back inconclusive. During that time at home she planted and grew and has blessed others with her flowers. We have seen the Lord’s light in the darkness.

Around the same time, Summer’s dad was officially diagnosed with Alzheimers and by December 2021, he began a rapid decline, making it necessary for Summer to move to the family farm in northeastern Oklahoma to help her mom take care of him. She began seeds, started a big plot with flowers and vegetables and we have tasted and seen the Lord’s goodness in times of trouble.

This has been our season: filled with weeds and challenges, sorrow and gladness. But it turns out the beauty is more pronounced in the thick of things and blessings seem so clear as God’s grace and mercy are ever present and seemingly more obvious in such times as this. We have sought the Lord and found Him in all the things…

So all of that said, Fifth Season Farm has not been able to provide you with flowers this spring and summer and the upcoming seasons are a great unknown to us. What we do know is that God is good. He is our ever present help in times of trouble and His joy is our strength.

Thank you for being a part of our journey. We will keep you posted. If you have any questions in regards to your own growing, we’d love to try and answer them for you.

Happy Growing-

Chelsea and Summer

Green.

We set out to grow thousands of colorful flowers. And we did grow most of the flowers.

We didn’t expect that growing the flowers would come easier than growing the leafy greens that make the flower bouquets feel so lush. We didn’t know yet that the Cresses and Belles of Ireland wouldn’t hold up to our heat. We had good luck for a few weeks with different varieties of basil but much of that has gone to seed and become too spiky. The rest has succumbed to the bugs.

Honestly, we’re doing a lot of foraging for sufficient greens while we study what we need to do differently next year!

So this vase of just foliage looks especially lovely to us. 😍😍 (but if you look too closely you’ll see the holes from bugs so just don’t.)

She used our bright zinnias and cosmos for a very special wedding and we are thrilled to see the results. Gorgeous bride and gorgeous work, right?!

These Jewel of Opar seedlings were all sown the day in that top tray.

A month later they were all the same, small size and we bumped half of them up in to the larger bottom tray.

A couple of weeks and look at the growth on the ones that got bigger pots! We knew it would turn out this way but didn't imagine it would happen so quickly.

Part of the farming fun for us has been all the trialing we get to do, either intentionally or by happy accident.

We're getting the last few rounds of sunflowers into the ground for fall. Our sunflower success has been spotty this year with one crop of showstoppers and a few crops too short and small. We're taking good notes, testing our variables and waiting to see what we get next!

Peaches and cream in this week’s subscription bouquets. 😍

We’re trying to keep the look fresh since in our first year we’ve had great zinnias, zinnias, celosia, zinnias, amaranth, and more zinnias 🤣 we’re hoping for some great sunflowers next week and, you guessed it, more zinnias but they’re coming in fall colors!

The baby plants that are in here are fast asleep, just waiting for the warmth, water and air they need to wake up.

They don't even need the sun or soil just yet, as each seed already contains all the nutrition it will need until it sprouts. Like we shared a couple of weeks ago, plants make their own food.

Some seeds have even slept for thousands of years! When scientists uncovered King Tut's tomb they found a jar of bean seeds that had been in the tomb, dormant, for more than 3,000 years.

Would they grow?

Scientists planted them and they grew into lovely bean plants. Even today, there are people growing bean plants that originally started with King Tut's bean seeds!

How the flowers magnify the Lord, their Creator!

When was the last time you looked through a magnifying glass? It makes something look bigger so we can see it better, right?

When we study how beautiful and perfectly created the flowers are, we know that God, their Creator, is beautiful, perfect and creative.

When we look in awe and wonder at what He has created, He is magnified and pleased. And we understand Him better!

⭐️Oh, magnify the LORD with me, and let us exalt his name together!

We sowed many cosmos varieties this year and it’s allowed us to really narrow down the list for next year.

The orange Kennikura are gorgeous as they dance in the field but so fragile we can’t use them in the vase, even when harvested at the cracking stage. The Rubenzas are a perfect deep wine but don’t last long enough to use. These Afternoon Whites, however, are just lovely everywhere and almost keep up with the zinnias in a vase if we get a stem with enough buds on it.

We’re considering selling plant starts next spring and these might be the only cosmos user-friendly enough for that purpose.

God created all the plants on the third day and they are so interesting:

🌼all make their own food,

🌼some trap insects inside of them,

🌼 and some can grow so tall they dwarf the size of a blue whale.

We love studying the nature God created so we’re planning to share some of our study with you on Mondays in our series. Yes, today is Tuesday and we're a day behind already 😄

Geek out with us by reading the entire post or just continue to enjoy pretty flower photos - it’s all good.

Thanks for coming along with us!

Then God said, “Let the land produce vegetation: seed-bearing plants and trees on the land that bear fruit with seed in it, according to their various kinds.” And it was so. The land produced vegetation: plants bearing seed according to their kinds and trees bearing fruit with seed in it according to their kinds. And God saw that it was good. And there was evening, and there was morning - the third day.

We sowed the last zinnias of 2021 a week ago in seed trays. It was our fourth planting of zinnias and this last one will be ready to go into the field where we pull out the first planting in a few weeks.

There will be many more of these deep reds for fall and we’ll have new oranges, yellows and corals.

These zinnias last so long in the vase and exhibit so much diversity within the same variety we just love them!

These beautiful ruffles have been growing in our home gardens long before we had the farm. We called it purple basil but it turns out it’s actual name is much more impressive sounding: Shiso.

We aren’t sure if it’s a basil or a mint as we’ve read both but we are sure we love it in our summer bouquets. Like our other basils, it’s finicky when harvested but boiling water and enough time to hydrate seems to do the trick.

Weeding is made a little more bearable next to these Indonesian Kennikura cosmos.

They are one of our favorite flowers as the flouncy blooms sway in the breeze. They are also our most delicate and tangled bloom and currently the source of much frustration in bouquets.

So we’re planning to put another row of these right at the front of the farm by the road, not cut them and let everyone enjoy them as they drive by.

This particular bunch welcomed kids, parents and leaders at our VBS last week. We know all those leaders need a pick-me-up those last few mornings of VBS 😉
