The great thing about food is that it’s a holder of & trigger for memories.
As a little girl I would stay the night with my Nanny often and we had a tradition; after my bath I would crawl in her lap & we would share a red delicious apple. She was magic with a paring knife (actually she was magic with EVERYTHING - cooking, sewing, gardening & making people feel like the most cared for person on earth!). She could peel that apple all the way around so the skin came off in one long strip. It’s one of the small memories I hold close to my heart.
This morning while I was preparing to make apple pie bites for a client I peeled my apples in complete strips and I just had to smile.
This month holds the anniversary of her passing and even though I would give my right arm to have her here with me just one more day I know that every time I step in the test kitchen and tie on my apron she’s looking over my shoulder & whispering instructions in my heart. You may not have ever met my Nanny but in a way you kinda have because Ruth Keeton is the inspiration for every meal I make.
