There can be only one! It all takes place as part of the 17th Annual Spring Great Plains Renaissance and Scottish Festival April 9th - 10th, 2022 in Sedgwick County Park in Wichita, KS. The International Highland Games Federation President Francis Brebner has graciously awarded the IHGF National Caber Toss Championship to the Wichita Highland Games! What does that mean? The winner of the Caber Toss claims the crown as the IHGF National Caber Toss Champ! We are greatly honored to host these world class Olympic level events right here in Wichita. Be part of the action and come out and support local events and these great athletes, some of who will represent the USA in the 2022 IHGF World Amateur Highland Games Championships!

The caber toss is the event that most people most often associate with the Highland Games and is really thrilling to behold! The primary objective is to toss the caber so that it turns end over end, falling away from the tosser. Ideally it should fall directly away from the tosser in the "12 o'clock" position. The distance thrown is unimportant.

The tosser balances the caber upright, tapered end downwards, against his or her shoulder and neck, the caber being supported by stewards or fellow-competitors while being placed into position. The tosser then crouches, sliding their interlocked hands down the caber and under the rounded base, and lifts it in their cupped hands.

While standing, the tosser must balance the caber upright; this is not easy with the heavier end at the top, and less-experienced tossers may be unable to stop the caber falling to one side after lifting it. The tosser then walks or runs a few paces forward to gain momentum, and flips the tapered end upwards so that the large end hits the ground first, and, if well tossed, the caber falls directly away from the tosser.

Weight and strength are essential for success, but technique is also important for balancing the caber when lifting it, and flipping up the held (tapered) end to promote a clean toss.

You can see our athletes compete in the caber toss and all the other great events at the Wichita Highland Games taking place during the Spring Great Plains Renaissance and Scottish Festival April 9th and 10th at Sedgwick County Park in Wichita, Kansas!

A huge thank you to everyone that was a part of the Fall 2021 Wichita Highland Games at the Great Plains Renaissance & Scottish Festival, including Dave Glasgow and his tireless crew, and the Highland athletes that amazed us with their prowess! Thank you to the Scottish Clans that imparted their knowledge and history to eager patrons, including Kenny & Pam, and Sharon of the MacNeils, Jon & Norma of the MacPherson, The Scottish American Military Society, Cat & Robert of the MacLarens, Allen & Jamie of the Elliotts, and all those from Baird, Henderson, Gordon, and Montgomery! And lest we forget, and they certainly won't let us, thank you to the Pipers and Drummers that regailed us with their music and lead the clans onto the field to notes of Scottish pride! Thank you to all the volunteers that assisted in set-up, tear-down, and all the things behind-the-scenes, without whom the event could never happen! And finally... thank you to all the patrons that graced the Festival with their presence, enjoying all that we we had to offer by way of entertainment, history, and excitement! Huzzah!

The spring Great Plains Renaissance and Scottish Festival originally scheduled for April 18th and 19th has been postponed until our fall date of September 26th and 27th, 2020. This is being done in accordance with the temporary ban of public events of more than 50 people enacted by Sedgwick County leadership and the governor of the State of Kansas. The safety, security and health of our patrons, performers, vendors, staff and volunteers will always be of the utmost importance and concern to us. Current ticket holders and vendors will be given the choice of rolling their tickets or vendor space over to the fall event or a refund. Emails will be sent out to all current vendors by Friday March 20th, 2020. We appreciate your patience, support and understanding regarding this situation. We will look forward to seeing everyone in the fall September 26th and 27th, 2020,. Huzzah!

Sticks and stones! The stone put is one of the main Scottish heavy athletic events at modern-day Highland games gatherings. Similar to the shot put, the stone put more frequently uses an ordinary stone or rock instead of a steel ball. The weight of the stone will vary from 16 to 26 lb for men (or 8 to 18 lb for women) depending on which type of stone put event (Braemar stone or Open stone) is being contested and also on the idiosyncrasies of the event (mainly because stones in use have no standard weight). There are also some differences in allowable techniques and rules.

Robert Burns was keen on stone putting and apparently left his favourite putting stone at Ellisland Farm near Dumfries. If he saw anyone using it whilst he lived there he would call "Bide a wee" and join in the sport, always proving that he was the strongest man there.

As with most aspects of the Scottish Highland games, and Scottish Highlands culture generally, a certain amount of legend has grown around the origins and antiquity of the stone put.

The "stones of strength" which were of two types. In one, the Clach Cuid Fir (or Manhood Stone), a very large stone of well over 100 lb is employed and the test is to be able to lift it to a certain height or place it on a wall.

In the other type, the Clach Neart (or Stone of Strength), a smaller stone, variable in weight, but around 20 or 30 lb, is employed. The object is to see how far the stone could be thrown or putted.
