Getting educated with this particular topic has been a painful process. Lots of on-site technical difficulties or reschedules or needing to cancel all together, all because of these pesky airspace authorizations. I’ve learned a few things as I’ve used DJI drones.

• Most flight authorizations can be handled on DJI’s self-unlock page. Always check here before confirming a job.

• More demanding authorizations need to be handled by submitting a waiver via the FAA DroneZone website. After the waiver is reviewed/approved, submit a DJI custom-unlock request that includes the FAA approval document. Usually you’re ready to fly within 5 minutes of submitting the DJI request.

• Finally, all clearances (self-unlock or custom-unlock) can be easily imported/enabled in the DJI drone. If the DJI unlock is done correctly, the unlocking license will show up automatically in the drone, ready for importing and enabling.
