Brown Butter Creations will be handing out cookies at the end of this year's Juneteenth Celebration. Brown Butter Creations was established in 2018, and is run by two sisters, Marika Esteves-Smith and Ashli Esteves-Nelson. Their goal is to create memorable experiences through their desserts and have you reaching for the next bite saying to yourself “Mmm…that tastes like more!”

Tony Harrington & Touch is a multi-faceted band that has the capacity vocally and instrumentally to perform an array of R & B, Jazz, Motown, and Classic Rock material. The band is composed of Tony Harrington, Daphne "Zoe" Falconer-Davis, Mark Moore, Patrick Williams, Dan McNamarra, Greg Glove, John Davis , and Pat Thompson.

Juneteenth Celebration Emcee

Shawn Wooden, a Hartford native, was Connecticut’s 83rd state treasurer. He previously spent 21 years as an investment attorney focused on public pension plans. Wooden worked in key roles for the mayor of Hartford and the state commissioner of social services. A former president of the Hartford City Council and Connecticut state director of Project Vote, he also served on the Connecticut Citizen’s Ethics Advisory Board overseeing the Connecticut Office of State Ethics and worked in the AFL-CIO’s Office of Investment in Washington, D.C. Wooden was recognized as a Connecticut Super Lawyer for securities and corporate finance, business/corporate. Wooden currently works for Apollo and is responsible for the manager’s relationships with public pension plans and expanding products designed for the public
pension plan market. He is the father of two teenaged sons.

Leslie Mayes is a reporter for NBC Connecticut and the creator and host of “Connecticut in Color,” a program dedicated to highlighting the stories and discussing the issues of the Nutmeg State’s communities of color. While in New York City for NY1 News, she traveled across the country on the campaign trail, where she followed the Hillary Clinton and Obama presidential campaigns, the New York State Senate coup, and the Eliot Spitzer resignation. Leslie is an active member of the National Association of Black Journalists, enjoys working with children from under-served communities, and telling stories that might often go unnoticed.

The Amistad Center for Art & Culture's Juneteenth Celebration Honoree Spotlight:

A native of Connecticut, Jimmy Greene is considered one of the most respected saxophonists of his generation. He released two acclaimed volumes celebrating his daughter Ana’s life and spirit – the GRAMMY®-nominated Beautiful Life (Mack Avenue Records, 2014) and Flowers: Beautiful Life, Volume 2 (Mack Avenue Records, 2017). Greene and his groups perform regularly in jazz venues, festivals and clubs worldwide. He has also performed and presented in churches, faith-based conferences, mental health conferences and arts symposiums throughout the United States and Canada. He is Associate Professor of Music and Co-Coordinator of Jazz Studies at Western Connecticut State University in Danbury, CT.

The Amistad Center's 32nd Annual Juneteenth Celebration Artist Spotlight:

Nelba Márquez-Greene is a clinical fellow of the American Association of Marriage and Family Therapy and has worked in private practice, community mental health, and academic settings in the U.S. and Canada. She founded The Ana Grace Project after her daughter was murdered at Sandy Hook School on December 14, 2012. This movement has adopted classrooms in New Britain that focus on social and emotional learning. It has hosted mental health conferences and professional learning opportunities all over the country. Nelba was the founding member of the CTAMFT Diversity Committee and has served on the CTAMFT Board of Directors. Nelba has testified and advocated at the state and federal levels on many different mental health initiatives, hosted TEDx talks, and is a sought-after speaker nationally.

Linda F. Martin is a Hartford native who uses fabric textures, colors, and designs to create Collage Fiber Art to express who she is, where she comes from, what she sees, and where she is going. Several of her pieces have won awards, are included in virtual and traveling exhibits, have been recognized in publications, and have hung in group and solo exhibits as well as in private collections.

Gather with us outdoors for festivities, including a performance by Hartford's Proud Drill, Drum, and Dance Corp, live music from Nekita Waller, crafting with Jacqueline Bright, African drumming and storytelling by Our Culture is Beautiful, and Anne Cubberly's famous giant puppets.

FREE and open to the public. Bring the family! Fun for all ages!

Juneteenth Family Day is generously supported by The Hartford. Program supplies are generously donated by S&S Worldwide. This event is in collaboration with the Wadsworth Atheneum and partnership with the City of Hartford.
