Cheers is an iconic part of Boston’s culture, and Norm was one of its most beloved characters. George Wendt, the actor who played Norm Peterson, has sadly passed away on Tuesday, May 20th. Wendt’s portrayal of Norm made him a fan favorite, with his signature entrance always met with a chorus of “Norm!” from the bar patrons. He was a staple of the show for all 11 seasons, earning six consecutive Emmy nominations for his role.
His passing is a huge loss, not just for fans of Cheers, but for the entertainment world as a whole. He will be deeply missed.
