We have had an extremely special guest rehearsing with us in The Ironworks this week: Simon Armitage, Poet Laureate to Queen Elizabeth II and now to King Charles III…

We’re just a day away from a truly unique performance by Simon at the Parkway Cinema in Barnsley this Friday.

‘LYR/Simon Armitage Present: Barnsley - An Unnatural History’ is a poetic and musical happening celebrating Barnsley's Eldon Street through the lens of its former Natural History Museum.

The premiere performance is a new collection of poems/lyrics by the Poet Laureate Simon Armitage with his band LYR. Simon Armitage has been the artist in residence with the Eldon Street Heritage Action Zone for the past year exploring Eldon Street, it’s mythologies, stories, character and using Barnsley Archives as a creative resource.

A BSL interpreter will be joining Simon and the band on stage, interpreting the work throughout the evening.

Guest will also receive a booklet containing work created as part of the project.

The vast rolling mill of the Elsecar Ironworks…. built in 1850 by the Dawes Ironmasters, who leased both the Elsecar Ironworks and the Milton Ironworks (on what is now the Forge Playing Field) from Earl Fitzwilliam.

The Ironworks is now Grade II* Listed & a Scheduled Ancient Monument.

It’s a thriving event space too - home to antique fairs, maker’s markets, craft fairs, weddings, conferences, gigs and much more too.

Join us this weekend for the legendary SUPPA Club on Friday and Saturday & a huge wedding fair on Sunday!

The Miners’ Lodging House, Elsecar.

Built for Earl Fitzwilliam of Wentworth Woodhouse in 1853, the lodging house provided single rooms and hot running water (the first in the village!) for 22 miners who worked at Elsecar’s collieries.

A small Yorkshire village built for aristocrats… its furnaces towered into the sky and collieries reached deeper and deeper underground…

What did it mean to live and work here? What did Elsecar make? Why did Royals come here? How did Elsecar innovation shape the Industrial Revolution?

Find out more on our tours, that meet at 2pm every Saturday and Sunday at the Elsecar Visitor Centre.
