Prof Morgan said this week's displays pale in comparison to the Carrington event, a huge auroral display that occurred in 1859.

In the US, for example, the Air Force Research Laboratory (AFRL) is working on some of the critical technologies needed for such a system, in a project known as Space Solar Power Incremental Demonstrations and Research (SSPIDR).

These include improving solar cell efficiencies, solar-to-radio frequency conversion and beam forming, as well as reducing the large temperature fluctuations on spacecraft components and creating designs for deployable structures.

Late last year, the team successfully demonstrated new components for a so-called sandwich tile, which is used to convert solar energy into radio waves.

Nearly 2.5 miles (4km) of new hedgerow and banks were also being planted as part of what the trust said was its first major community woodland in Britain.

The trust said the variety of species gave the woods its future-proofing, giving it "the greatest chance of surviving changes in climate and any future tree diseases" by having "the right trees in the right place".

John Deakin, head of woodlands at the trust, added: "We are in the midst of a biodiversity and climate crisis and need to do all we can to provide more space for nature and store carbon across all National Trust land."

Several important habitats are present in Herm, Jethou and the Humps, including eelgrass beds, maerl beds and seven sunken shipwreck reefs, which provide spawning grounds for fish.

This site also supports flatfish, shellfish, seabirds, basking sharks, sun fish, Atlantic grey seals and four species of cetacean.

Herm's event is being organised by Agriculture, Countryside and Land Management Services, the Clean Earth Trust, La Société Guernesiaise, Guernsey Conservation Volunteers and the Bailiwick Eelgrass Exploration Project.
