It's all in the details... would you know?
First you need the basics right - a good large room, a good location, the right temperature, and a good bed - but after that comes all the details, either lifting a hotel to the skies or sending it to the bottom of review...
Here are some examples from a different hotels in a recent research trip:
a. A great terasse, but with a strong smell of curry from the restaurant 24-7
b. Nice large room with beautiful decor - but garbage can does not open and eur power plug does not work
c. I ask reception about bus-times and get 3 different answers
Great service examples at cheap hotels:
1. First day I ask for soy milk coffee - second day I get it without asking
2. I ask for bus times and receptionist reply: "My husband can take you, he is going there anyway"
3. "Would you like to join us for a quick fishing trip?"
4. We don't use fixed checkout times but if you can be out by 12 it will be nice for our housekeeping. But I will give you the key to another room where you can shower and nap if you like...
