🍁 The Women4Climate mentorship program empowers female climate leaders addressing the climate emergency in Toronto!

The program uses mentoring, training & networking opportunities 🗣️ to provide participants with the resources and support to take their climate project, product, or business to the next level! 🏆

Upon completion of the mentorship program, participants also have the opportunity to pitch their climate project to the City of Toronto and their partners. The top three projects will receive a cash award and additional support to advance their work. 🎉

Women4Climate Toronto is currently seeking MENTORS across the public, private, and non-profit sectors. 🌱

🌍 "A Call for Leadership and Collective Action on Sustainability" | Inside Film Magazine

Last September, at Toronto, we hosted the Australian SPEC cohort 🇦🇺! In a reflection of their experience at SPF24 and the Ascend Sustainability Training program led by Green Spark Group they’re calling for film and media sectors to unite and take bolder steps toward a more sustainable industry 🤝.

While acknowledging the efforts of individuals who are currently championing sustainability and green leadership, there are still major actions to be undertaken by the global film industry.

Our Australian friends identify 𝘁𝗵𝗿𝗲𝗲 𝗺𝗮𝗶𝗻 𝗰𝗮𝗹𝗹𝘀 𝘁𝗼 𝗮𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻:
🪢 “We call for sustainability mandates to be tied to overarching studio and distributor policies, funding models, deliverables and incentives.”

➕ “We call for every production to 𝗰𝗮𝗹𝗰𝘂𝗹𝗮𝘁𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗶𝗿 𝗰𝗮𝗿𝗯𝗼𝗻 𝗲𝗺𝗶𝘀𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗵𝗶𝗿𝗲 𝘀𝘂𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗶𝗻𝗮𝗯𝗶𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗳𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹𝘀 consistent with the size and scale of the production.”

🎞️ Last September, at Toronto, the Green Frame group was officially announced!

Led by CBC/Radio-Canada, the Green Frame is a coalition of Canada’s major content organizations and financiers that have come together to harmonize sustainability initiatives in film and TV. 🍁

In addition to the four outlined goals, 𝗲𝗮𝗰𝗵 𝗺𝗲𝗺𝗯𝗲𝗿 𝗼𝗳 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗚𝗿𝗲𝗲𝗻 𝗙𝗿𝗮𝗺𝗲 𝗵𝗮𝘀 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗺𝗶𝘁𝘁𝗲𝗱 𝘁𝗼 𝗮 𝘀𝗲𝘁 𝗼𝗳 𝗶𝗻𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗮𝗹 𝗮𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀:

💡 𝗞𝗲𝘆 𝘁𝗮𝗸𝗲𝗮𝘄𝗮𝘆𝘀 𝗳𝗿𝗼𝗺 𝗼𝘂𝗿 “𝗪𝗮𝘀𝘁𝗲 𝗡𝗼𝘁 | 𝗖𝗶𝗿𝗰𝘂𝗹𝗮𝗿𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗶𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗗𝗲𝘀𝗶𝗴𝗻” 𝘀𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻:

The term “𝘤𝘪𝘳𝘤𝘶𝘭𝘢𝘳 𝘦𝘤𝘰𝘯𝘰𝘮𝘺”, coined by Ellen MacArthur, refers to the idea that 𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘆𝘁𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗵𝗮𝘀 𝘃𝗮𝗹𝘂𝗲 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗻𝗼𝘁𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗰𝗿𝗲𝗮𝘁𝗲𝘀 𝘄𝗮𝘀𝘁𝗲 🗑️.

To be successful, 𝗰𝗶𝗿𝗰𝘂𝗹𝗮𝗿𝗶𝘁𝘆/𝘀𝘂𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗶𝗻𝗮𝗯𝗶𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗺𝘂𝘀𝘁 𝗯𝗲 𝗶𝗺𝗽𝗹𝗲𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗱 𝗮𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗼𝘂𝘁𝘀𝗲𝘁 𝗼𝗳 𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘆 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗱𝘂𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 🌍. Sustainability coordinators should begin their involvement within the soft prep stage and a script “𝘤𝘭𝘪𝘮𝘢𝘵𝘦 𝘱𝘢𝘴𝘴” should be conducted prior to filming in order to make sustainable adjustments (i.e. choosing eco-friendly props, changing filming locations to areas with grid power access).

DID YOU KNOW? Set designs can be sustainable, too! Check out the 📃 paper mache set from Roberto Bonelli and the 👕 fabric set from Tony Tomety below.

They were able to use local, sustainable materials to create budget and time-friendly sets! After filming, cement waste from Roberto’s cave set was converted into biodiesel and the wooden fabric frames from Tony’s set were reused by local carpenters.

𝘐𝘯𝘥𝘪𝘨𝘦𝘯𝘰𝘶𝘴 𝘴𝘵𝘰𝘳𝘺𝘵𝘦𝘭𝘭𝘪𝘯𝘨 “𝘤𝘰𝘮𝘦𝘴 𝘧𝘳𝘰𝘮 𝘢 𝘱𝘭𝘢𝘤𝘦 𝘰𝘧 𝘣𝘶𝘪𝘭𝘥𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘬𝘯𝘰𝘸𝘭𝘦𝘥𝘨𝘦” and “transmitting knowledge systems”. It can be seen as a “ceremony” or a circular system, whereby Indigenous communities are constantly consulted and included in the filmmaking and storytelling process 📕.

Defining true Indigenous cinema 📽️ begins with the acknowledgement of its differences from Hollywood productions. Hollywood’s filmmaking hierarchies, defined by its top-down approaches and strict timelines, are counterproductive to the community aspect of Indigenous cinema 🤝. The 𝘥𝘦𝘦𝘱𝘭𝘺 𝘱𝘦𝘳𝘴𝘰𝘯𝘢𝘭 𝘯𝘢𝘵𝘶𝘳𝘦 𝘰𝘧 𝘐𝘯𝘥𝘪𝘨𝘦𝘯𝘰𝘶𝘴 𝘧𝘪𝘭𝘮𝘴 𝘳𝘦𝘲𝘶𝘪𝘳𝘦𝘴 𝘵𝘪𝘮𝘦 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘳𝘦𝘴𝘰𝘶𝘳𝘤𝘦𝘴 𝘥𝘦𝘧𝘪𝘯𝘦𝘥 𝘣𝘺 𝘐𝘯𝘥𝘪𝘨𝘦𝘯𝘰𝘶𝘴 𝘯𝘦𝘦𝘥𝘴 rather than outsider, executive allocations.

We must also acknowledge the historical and ongoing erasure of Indigenous creative voices. There remains a constant fight to bring 𝘢𝘶𝘵𝘩𝘦𝘯𝘵𝘪𝘤 Indigenous voices into the forefront of the film industry. Thus, 𝘐𝘯𝘥𝘪𝘨𝘦𝘯𝘰𝘶𝘴 𝘧𝘪𝘭𝘮 𝘴𝘤𝘩𝘰𝘰𝘭𝘴, 𝘧𝘪𝘭𝘮 𝘧𝘦𝘴𝘵𝘪𝘷𝘢𝘭𝘴, 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘧𝘶𝘯𝘥𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘢𝘳𝘦 𝘦𝘹𝘵𝘳𝘦𝘮𝘦𝘭𝘺 𝘷𝘪𝘵𝘢𝘭 𝘪𝘯 𝘨𝘳𝘰𝘸𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘐𝘯𝘥𝘪𝘨𝘦𝘯𝘰𝘶𝘴 𝘤𝘪𝘯𝘦𝘮𝘢 𝘴𝘦𝘤𝘵𝘰𝘳.

💡 𝗞𝗲𝘆 𝘁𝗮𝗸𝗲𝗮𝘄𝗮𝘆𝘀 𝗳𝗿𝗼𝗺 𝗼𝘂𝗿 “𝗔𝗻𝗶𝗺𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗮 𝗚𝗿𝗲𝗲𝗻𝗲𝗿 𝗪𝗼𝗿𝗹𝗱: 𝗦𝘁𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗴𝗶𝗲𝘀 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗦𝘂𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗶𝗻𝗮𝗯𝗹𝗲 𝗩𝗙𝗫 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗔𝗻𝗶𝗺𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻” 𝘀𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻:

In this session, we got a special inside peek into Cyber Group Studios and Mikros Animation! These two amazing organizations are paving the way for sustainability in animation 💻!

Here’s a 📸 snapshot look into a successful sustainability case study we explored with Cyber Group Studios (CGS):

Guided by findings from their 2022 company-wide carbon footprint report, CGS implemented a three-part action plan to target carbon emission reduction.

𝗙𝗜𝗡𝗗𝗜𝗡𝗚𝗦
CGS found that employee lunches and business travel 🚗 contributed most significantly to their total carbon emissions.

𝗔𝗖𝗧𝗜𝗢𝗡 𝗣𝗟𝗔𝗡
🥕 𝘍𝘖𝘖𝘋: Food awareness strategies and posters were brought in to showcase the impact of meat consumption and encourage employees to choose vegetarian/vegan options 🥬. Reusable lunch containers were also introduced to reduce disposable packaging.

🚌 𝘛𝘙𝘈𝘝𝘌𝘓: To encourage employees to opt for train travel, CGS provided a 𝟳𝟱% 𝗮𝗶𝗱 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗽𝘂𝗯𝗹𝗶𝗰 𝘁𝗿𝗮𝗻𝘀𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 and expanded their work-from-home policies. Electric car chargers and bike racks 🚲 were additionally erected to promote eco-friendly travel.

By implementing Realtime and AI animation, CGS was also able to 𝗿𝗲𝗱𝘂𝗰𝗲 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗱𝘂𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗯𝘆 ~𝟭𝟱 𝗱𝗮𝘆𝘀, equating to a 30% reduction from their traditional production timeline ⌛.
