Bastion Festival 2024 – Thank You!

We would like to extend our sincere thanks to everyone who made Bastion 2024 the incredible event that it was (there are too many to thank in just this post). It’s so rewarding to see this regional event continue to grow and be celebrated amongst the Mallacoota community and travelling tourists alike – it means the world to us!

The perfect weather conditions and incredible performances from our artists made for smiling faces all-round the festival with a diverse range of ages all enjoying the one event and looking out for one another. It’s this sense of community that Mallacoota offers which really helps drive the success of Bastion Festival.

We would like to take the opportunity to thank all of our extremely talented artists that performed at Bastion Festival 2024. A truly eclectic range of acts ensured there was something for everyone and the sounds that transpired throughout the afternoon and night were remarkable.

Thank you to our range of local and Melbourne based artists who contributed through graphic design, physical artwork & animations to make this event unique. This included .com.au (Branding & Concepts), Jya Ruby (projected animations), (Mural & Street Art), and .jpeg (Graphics & animations). A special mention to Jya & Ash who ran a mentorship program with two young mentees as part of a program.

Bastion Festival would like to thank Music Victoria & Far East Music Program for supporting us and providing the funding for this event. We would also like to acknowledge the for hosting another great event. As well as our production crew - Aaron and team from Fitzpatricks Entertainment for making everything sound amazing as always.

Finally, a huge thank you to all our Bastion staff, volunteers, and attendees for creating such a beautiful atmosphere and festival site. All the blood, sweat and tears that goes into setting up this incredible event is all worth it when you have such an amazing festival like our third installment was. See you all again soon!

Big love,

Bastion Festival

ANNOUNCING OUR FINAL ARTIST FOR BASTION FESTIVAL 2024 LOCAL HERO - OLD MATE

where do we start… The man oozes class behind the decks running vinyl only sets that will have you stomping a hole in the floor from the first track to the last.

Oldmate brings a cavernous sound to each and every set. With an ‘all killer, no filler policy’.
Oldmate’s selects drip from the stalactites with moments of 90’s tech, b***y house, and deep techno with a few warpers designed to lead you astray on the journey.

Oldmate’s underground sound has ties to his roots, being involved with running iconic parties across the scene in Melbourne during the 90’s such as Teriyaki Anarki Saki alongside stalwarts such as Simon Slieker, Dee Dee, Slack, and Disko P***y to name a few.

Be ready to be locked into the groove when the local legend steps up to the plates. We can’t wait to see what the mysterious man has in store for Bastion’s third instalment.

ANNOUNCING BIRDSNAKE FOR BASTION FESTIVAL

Naarm’s groove merchants, Birdsnake, are crafting a name for themselves as one of the most entrancing acts in the local scene. Their sound provides a free-flowing sensory experience that seamlessly fuses electro beats, psychedelic synth-funk and downtempo grooves.

Birdsnake will provide the perfect soundscape in the early afternoon to get you moving on the dancefloor.

A reminder to purchase tickets asap as we are expecting Bastion Festival to sell out.

ANNOUNCING TILLY VW

After self-releasing singles ‘Criteria Killed the Creative’, ‘Golden Sands’ and ‘Room For You’ this year, Tilly and her band have been building momentum through a string of hushed performances around Melbourne.

Over the last year, Tilly VW has been working on her debut album. The style is musically adventurous and spans a range of influences, with moments of classical impressionism, the lyrical urgency of beat poetry, jazzy drum breaks and edgier punk angles. Tilly will be bringing her relaxed solo set to Bastion Festival, where she will be playing stripped back songs from the upcoming album on guitar, keys and drum machine.

We can’t wait to have Tilly open the Bastion stage!

ANNOUNCING DJ ALAN TO OUR DJ LINEUP

With a soothing balance of gritty percussive grooves, proggy textures, and dreamy pads, DJ Alan’s music possesses a transformative and immersive listening experience for any dance floor.

In his DJ sets, whether it be an early morning or a late night, Henry likes to think about what the auditory influence will have on the particular setting or the time of day he is playing. For his set at Bastion, Henry is excited to combine a range of bleepy, bouncy, and boppy house and tech house grooves. You can expect lots of punchy kicks, raspy hats, boxy claps and a few sensual vocals for good measure.

A well-established Australian producer and DJ, Andras has earned his stripes through his unique and unpredictable take on dance music.

His release’s cover a broad range of genres and sounds with a loose focus on utilising drum machine rhythms and soft synthesis across his discography.

Andras’ style will provide an electrifying set with diverse selections to really get the dancefloor at Bastion moving. We are very excited to have him join our music programme for 2024.

ANNOUNCING BANANAGUN FOR BASTION 2024

Bananagun are a five-piece band from Melbourne led by songwriter Nicholas Van Bakel. There’s a deeply percussive element to the band’s psychedelic ode to Mother Nature, as seen in their debut album The True Story of Bananagun, released to critical acclaim in 2020.

As a live outfit the band are electric and eclectic, matching the psychedelic songwriting of Electric Prunes and The Free Design with Stereolab’s fizz and pop.

Their unique sound will add an exciting layer to Bastion’s music programme.

BASTION BEATS 2023, WOW!

Now that the dust has settled, it’s time to reflect on how incredible Friday night was. We are incredibly stoked with the reception in support of Bastion Beats’ second instalment. It was truly something special!

To see so many community members and holidaying tourists out supporting this regional event was epic. There was a strong sense of community energy across the entire afternoon & night, with a feeling of everyone looking out for one another.

Mallacoota has a very special sense of community, bound through hardship and a collective mindset to build each other up in true community spirit. It was great to see families enjoying live music while kids ran around the bowling green in a safe environment.

Throwing events in our remote South Eastern corner of Victoria makes things logistically challenging yet our team and support networks in town helped to push this event into reality.

The Bastion Beats team would like to thank East Gippsland Community Foundation for supporting us and providing funding for this event. Furthermore, we thank Mallacoota Events Inc for being our Auspice as well as support crew behind the scenes. We wouldn’t have been able to progress without either of their support.

We would also like to thank all of the extremely talented artists that performed at Bastion Beats 2023. We couldn’t have been happier with the performances on the day of the event. The energy that transpired across the stage really did match the beautiful landscape of the wilderness coast.

Thank you to the physical, and projected artwork produced also. These pieces were curated by talented local, and Naarm based artists Jya Ruby, Ash, and Ethan Etheridge.

Jya - Projected animations
Ash - for his Mural and Graffiti art
Ethan - graphics and animations

A massive thank you to the army putting together the event in the days leading up -from Decor and styling, bump in/bump out crew, the well-being crew and psych first aiders, artist liaison, door crew, stage management & backline, stage builders, Production crew, and security you all play a huge role.

We would also like to acknowledge The Mallacoota Golf and Country Club for hosting this years event again. Awesome job from all the team working behind the bar and in the kitchen. Massive props!

Lastly we would like to thank all our amazing attendees! For coming down and supporting Bastion Beats again this year. It was rewarding to see smiling faces, and people enjoying themselves throughout the course of the event, it’s what pushes us to keep growing this event to be the best it can be for the local community. See you all again next year!

Introducing you to the incredible talented, Uncle Archie Roach Foundation award winning artist - Bumpy. Bumpy will be performing at Bastion Beats as a two piece, expect her breathtaking vocals to cascade across the lush bowling green and out to Bastion Point tomorrow afternoon.

Adopting her childhood nickname — adorned due to a knack for bumping into all kinds of obstacles — Bumpy pulls from the strength found in tenderness, scars and all. The Noongar woman and Naarm artist’s stirring voice is transportive, arresting listeners with complex, intimate and multi-faceted truths of loss, joy and connection.

Whether paired-backed to just her voice and a guitar (‘Falling’), adorned with luscious strings (‘Return Home’) or playing off a live band ('Leave It All Behind', ‘Hide & Seek’), Bumpy’s music is always honest, raw and purely captivating. Live, she brings all facets of herself to the stage: vulnerable and strong, melancholic and energetic, serious and silly, always entrancing.

Having previously played festivals such as Strawberry Fields, Boogie Festival, Queenscliff Music Festival, Sun Cycle and more, Bumpy appeared as part of VIVID Festival at the Sydney Opera House forecourt, alongside Yussef Dayes, Hiatus Kaiyote, Mildlife and others. 2022 saw Bumpy win the Triple J Unearthed NIMAs Competition and play at the awards in Darwin, feature as a Triple J Spotlight Artist and win the Uncle Archie Roach Foundation award at the Music Victoria Awards.

Bumpy’s debut EP ‘Morning Sun’ will be out Jan 27 via Astral People Recordings.

We are only four days away from welcoming you all to the Mallacoota Golf & Country Club. In the lead up we want to provide some insight into the incredible performers soundtracking your night.

Flash’s sound encompasses spacey atmospheric soundscapes, with body driven drum programming. Carrying themes of prog, trance, tech, and deep rollers with polyrhythms scattered throughout. The Naarm based Producer and DJ’s sound can only be surmised as steez, genre bending throughout his sets. We can’t wait to welcome Flash back after his stellar performance at the inaugural Bastion Beats

Born and raised in Mallacoota, Zaccy is the youngest artist on our line-up yet his DJ skills and selections would have you thinking he’s a veteran of the game. Zaccy represents a key cornerstone of the Bastion Beats foundation - giving opportunities to emerging artists in East Gippsland and his electric set at Bastion Beats’ Easter event was one to remember. He’s back again this year to kick off proceedings, expect his floaty house selects to soundtrack the afternoon on the lush bowling green.

Following several iterations, Travalley have found their place as a two-piece outfit, a condensed line-up helped refine their signature sound of catch hooks and pristine harmonies, encased in an upbeat euphony of driving drums and jangly guitars. Expect a high energy performance from Levi & Sam that highlights their brotherly bond, synonymous harmonies and infectious onstage banter. This solidarity evokes unmatched connectedness between the band and the crowd, turning their shows into an exhilarating performance. We can’t wait to see them grace the Bastion Beats stage in 2023.

Janie is a singer songwriter originally from South Gippsland who has been gracing the music scene for the past few years now. Her songwriting portrays honesty and her voice resonates smooth and angelic tones. Janie has performed at music festivals such as NYE on The Hill, Ocean Sounds, Sounds of Summer and also graced our television screens on Season 9 of The Voice Australia, mentored by Delta Goodrem.
