Took me a while to put this episode out, but we’re back to regular programming with this summer’s radio show: two hours of organic ambient and drones by Akie (first half) and I, up on my SoundCloud.

Akie has cultivated an ear for rare sounds since coming of age, working for collectors’ favorite record store Rare Groove in Osaka. Now based in Tokyo, she is a buyer for Newtone Records and recently released a mixtape on Bristol label do you have peace?
Her mix is an exercise in restraint, effortlessly taking you exactly where your mind needs to be.

Archived! In this month's podcast for LYL radio I am joined by Samejima-sempai 🙌 ROCKDOWN is as low-profile as he is highly regarded in the selector circuit in Japan. Having amassed a massive collection of Japanese ambient and house rarities (and some more) long before the craze took over the world, his output of podcasts (Walearic Series, NTS, Creme Organization...) is very sought after by those in the know, as is the record bible "Walearic Disk Guide" he contributed to as a writer.
His mix (first hour) gradually builds up from deep to mellow. I take over for the second hour with some more Japanese experimentalism, dub and library music.

Archived! This month's guest on The Greater Good is MITAYO from snowy Sapporo. Orbiting around legendary club Precious Hall and underground music temple PROVO, he has carved himself a place as an exceptional selector, even by Sapporo's standards. His contribution to the series is as unique and eclectic as can be. It will remind those who know of MITAYO's own place スパイスの穴ムジナ, a cosy restaurant with an excellent DJ setup. This is where he hosts "Datsuryoku Ongakukai", a party that can only be described as a listening session/house party with food, desserts, booze and a generous dose of Japanese New Year's vibes: quiet yet festive, still and joyful at the same time.
Take a moment to enjoy the afterglow of the festivities ♨

1st hour is by MITAYO.

2nd hour by moi including Laurie Spiegel, a couple of STROOM favorites, goodies from 2021 I wish I could play more, and finishing with a track by friendly local ambient artist nubo - check his album out, it's beautiful.

今回のゲストは札幌ではとてもお世話になっているMITAYOです。初めて会った日に2人で8時間程B2Bをしたという、東京にもそうそうないレベルの仲間。まったく生まれも育ちも違うのに同じセンスを持っている人に出会うと、自分自身が肯定される気がする。自分ではぼんやりとしかわからなかった自分の体験の意味がはっきりとしてくる。

Archived! So happy to have YAMA-san as a guest❄️ Starting out in 1994, she has been a buyer for Osaka's own Newtone Records since the very beginning and has been part of some of the most ambitious underground parties in Japan such as eep (with Boredoms' EYE), FLOWER OF LIFE and MUSICO 6.
Her mix (1st hour) is remarkably eclectic and beautifully disjointed, and yet it goes deeper and deeper, hooking you into a groove you're not really sure you can hear.
Second hour by moi is an improvised collage of ambient electronics and experimental cuts.

In her own words:
As a child, I had insomnia but I became a narcoleptic at puberty". Her inner landscapes are Osaka, where she was born and raised, and Hong Kong, which she used to visit at least once a year before the Handover. Her influences include poets Gozo Yoshimasu and Octavio Paz, and writers Kenji Nakagami, Gilles Deleuze and Pierre-Félix Guattari. She has had mixes released on respected underground labels such as Black Smoker and Altzmusica. Her selections appeal to all senses, often collaged with field recordings and spoken word: while retaining an experimental approach, they flow effortlessly, with an extraordinary cinematic quality.

Remembering our friend Dora Diamant who left us 1 year ago on April 10, 2020.
Dora is a true icon and if it wasn't for her, WAIFU would not exist (more on this below). On April 10, the anniversary of her passing, we will speak about her, sing for her, hear about her.

Dora Diamant was an iconic figure on the Paris q***r scene, who spent parts of the last several years in Tokyo for both work and personal reasons, DJing many q***r events and parties here during that time. In April of 2019 Dora was working in Tokyo as the casting director for a fashion company and was performing as a guest DJ at a le***an party in Shinjuku 2chome which restricted entry to women. She invited Elin (one of the WAIFU organizers) to see her play. When Elin, together with some cis woman friends, went to the venue, she was denied entry for being transgender. Dora told the person in charge that she could not play a trans-exclusionary party, and, despite being the main guest DJ on the night, retrieved her record bag and boycotted the event. This courageous action of Dora’s marks the beginning of WAIFU.
Dora raised questions about transphobia in 2chome and refused to back down, even though she’d spent time there off and on for years and had deep connections with the scene. She was diagnosed with an aggressive cancer soon after returning to Paris. On April 10 of last year, she left this world. This April marks the first anniversary of our parting with her. But for us at WAIFU she will always be present: her refusal to accept discrimination and willingness to stand up for what she believed in led to the creation of this space, where no one is refused entry or discriminated against because of who they are or what categories they belong to, and where everyone can feel seen and part of a community.

A photographer, DJ and vocalist/guitarist of the unit pagtas, she made a name by releasing some very sought-after mix CDs which solely comprise of, respectively, Taiwanese rare cuts, motorbike sounds, and Dominican bass music. She delivers an hour of full-throttle aural exploration between minimalist music, reggaeton and footwork guaranteed to make your heart race. The 2nd hour is courtesy of me with stretched-out dubs, some d'n'b and otherwise leftfield vibes.

This show is a little deviation from the previous episodes, an excursion towards the edges of deep techno crossing a slow-motion storm of tribal drums and lush synth pads. Dr. Nishimura is an absolute master at his craft, whether handling italo cosmic cuts, breakbeat rollers or Japanese city pop. With more than 20 years under his belt as an expert buyer, notably for the late Cisco record stores (Tokyo), he currently runs Sunline Records (http://sunlinerecords.jp), an online store full of hand-picked wax beauties. Together with Compuma and Awano, he is one-third of Akuma no Numa ("The Devil's Swamp", check: https://soundcloud.com/compuma/akuma-no-numa-at-contact-tokyo-on-november-1-2019), an acclaimed DJ super-act specializing in "sound tectonics", or in other words, the finest slo-mo psychedelia around.
The first hour is by Dr. Nishimura, the second hour is some more crawling leftfield favorites by me.

New season of The Greater Good on LYL kicks off tonight with a guest mix from one of my favorite (yet still mega under the radar) selectors in Japan, DJ KURI. Listen for a mystical trip between ambient soundscapes, avant-garde electronics and spiritual jazz. A respected figure in the Japanese underground music scene, KURI is known for his marathon vinyl-only sets. His eclectic, mesmerizing selections range from experimental and meditative sounds to deeply organic, soulful grooves, down to the darkest edges of deep techno.
From now on the show will showcase local DJs who more often than not get very little exposure outside of our scene. Visual is provided by Jeremy Nealis ( aertime) whose artworks I have been a fan of for many years!

2) Tokyo just re-elected an ultra conservative, racist and revisionist governor even tho she failed to meet almost all her previous campaign pledges and consistently avoids any debate about her policy re-covid.
She’s literally the worst thing that could happen to women in Tokyo and I’m super bummed.

3) Thank you for reading this far. Just so u know I have been crying watching We are the world’s music video several days in a row. 10/10 highly recommended as a coping mechanism

How are we doing? Like many of you I've been reading loads of books, having conversations and doing my best contextualizing them in Japan where I live, looking into my own biases, committing to more conscious buying habits and trying to show up every single day. It's an uncomfortable journey as a white person but a necessary one.
The Greater Good is on air tonight 11PM Paris time. A show to pay tribute and respect, now more than ever, to my black music heroes🙏🏻

皆さんお元気ですか。私は元気です。今、自分の特権的立場を自覚して、積極的に勉強して、周りと会話をして、直接行動を起こすべく努力をしている人々がたくさんいます。素晴らしいことだと思います。
これからも、日本独特の文脈を把握しながら、 社会的に取り残されているすべてのコミュニティをサポートして、継続的な努力をしよう。理解力と当事者意識を高めよう。決して他人事ではないことに気付こう。超大変だけどライフワークだから絶対にあきらめないでほしい。そして、一人一人が声を上げると必ず大きなモノになる。

拡散をお願いします。
沈黙＝レイシストを支持すること。

他人事だと思いがちな日本人。
これは黒人と白人至上主義についての問題だけでなく、
人種差別、警察の暴力行為、植民地に対する支配者の責任の問題でもあります。つまり日本にも無関係ではありません。

この機会に、たくさんの人がこの問題について学び、その人たちの周りにいる家族、友人、知人、フォロワーにも届きますように。
話しづらくて気まずくても、あえて、頑張って声をききましょう。
それがマジョリティーの責任です。

日本語のコンテンツがまだ少ないですが、見つけたものを載せてみました。
個人的に、ドネーションも微力ながらしました。反レイシズムのオンライン講座を受けたり、積極的に知識を深めるつもりです。
