Last week, I dug all my field grown dahlias. I wanted to beat the rain, and I did! A few naps were sacrificed in the process, but I now have 22 bins of dahlias waiting for me to divide. I skipped washing this year in hopes of keeping them plump and firm while they wait.

I'll wash them just before I divide and tuck them into bins of vermiculite.

Is fall short for falling behind 😅

Just when I think I'm doing good, I pull my head out of the weeds and realize just how much I have left to do before the frost comes, and it's coming soon. The mornings and evening have the foreboding chill. Luckily like 99% of the dahlias are labeled. And I think I have enough pictures of each variety. I didn't do my handy spreadsheet this year, mom brain to blame.

Here's Chewy. My phone couldn't quite get the color right, but it's sure pretty.

I'm so happy to have beat the rain to these blooms. I love documenting all the beautiful dahlias I grow, but sometimes I run out of time, and the rain gets them.

The last flower arrangement of the season went out the door yesterday.

The flower field is slowly succumbing to the change in season. Old spent flower heads burst with seed. Powdery mildew has overtaken the zinnias. And things are bending and breaking under the weight of dew covered blossoms. These things are expected, and i do not fight them. They tell me the time for rest and planning is coming near. But the first frost hasn't come yet for the dahlias, so I have a little longer to enjoy their beauty.

Do you ever hold something in your hand and just feel so grateful?

I've "grown" this dahlia on and off for the past 5 years. The first year I grew it, I got one flower. I thought it was very pretty but didn't realize it was one of those unicorn varieties. In the 2nd year, I only had two tubers, and one rotted. The one that survived gave me a puny plant that never bloomed. It gave me one viable tuber, but then I lost it. Like actually lost it somewhere in my storage bins. I later found it again the following spring in my peat moss bin and planted it. Unfortunately, that plant fell victim to virus. Then, in the next 2 years, I tried to get it from dahlia sales, but due to its unicorn status, I failed to acquire one. Finally, this year, I got two from two different farms. Both plants are robust and thriving with no viral symptoms. They've also bloomed enough for a handful shot, making me feel so profoundly grateful that i finally have this variety.

KA'sâ„¢ Mocha Katie

All the KA's in my trial patch are starting to bloom. While Cinder Rose is definitely my favorite, Mocha Katie is so striking.

I've always struggled a bit with getting cuttings to really take off, but this year, they're doing so good. I'm crossing my fingers for good tuber production. Last year all my dahlias, tuber and cutting grown, didn't have the best production. I've put a lot of effort in this year in to deadhead regularly. I'm hopeful for a good tuber harvest this fall.

Ferncliff Rusty. The camera doesn't quite do the smokey color justice. In person, the color is a lovely smokey rose with a peachy under tone. It's new to me this year, and I'm really loving it. It will definitely be added to the keeper list.

What is I told you it's not Apple Blossom? Any ideas?

Well, it's a 1st year seedling dahlia. I will be holding it back and seeing how it does through storage and what it looks like next year. If it continues to look like this. I may have found myself a nice Apple Blossom dupe. I've had the worst luck sourcing healthy Apple Blossom. Last year, all 6 tubers I brought in were viral and got tossed in the garbage, so I gave up on it.
