To all our incredible stallholders and visitors – thank you for making it a memorable day!

It was wonderful to gather so many book arts enthusiasts under one roof, sharing in the creativity, conversations, and community spirit that made this event memorable. We loved connecting with artists and visitors from both near and far, and seeing some of you leave with a new book or two to add to your collection!

We’d love to hear how you found out about our event! Did you hear through the UWE Book Arts newsletter, social media, local guides, postcards, a workshop or maybe by word of mouth? Let us know in the comments ⬇️

made us feel very welcome, the tables and chairs were set up already for us and there was complementary tea and coffee for all the stallholders - if you're interested in hiring out the venue for your event do get in touch with Dee. Such a great location in the creative quarter in Nottingham.

Also a big shout out to Cleeve Press and .phil5 who wanted to join us but weren't able to this time. Hope to see you at the next one!

Another featured artist at the Notts Book Arts Fair tomorrow is Peter Knight from The Common Press CRICH, bringing a range of artists books, pop up cards and pop up structures using intaglio prints. Peter often brings the printing plates to show alongside the work which is always so interesting to see.

"My bookarts spring directly from a broad art and design practice of painting, printmaking and letterpress. From a creative gambit; a process of speculative concept and material experimentation, I add to my exploration of history, landscape and memory across material and process specialisms. This hybrid approach samples traditional book structures (ie, tunnel books, leporello etc) found letterpress and halftone blocks, combined with printmaking approaches in a parallel body of my process and subject concerns.
Although not exclusively regional in subject matter my work has a focus in Derbyshire; its a primary source, accessible and relevant. My working processes range from laser cut wooden covers, to engravings with letterpress covers to single sheets of folded A4 photocopied images. I often work in series and look at different sequential and process ways of organising materials, words and concerns of subject matter."

Only one more day until the Notts Book Arts Fair but still time to introduce the artists who will be exhibiting! New to the fair this year are Rock Tree Landscape - artist’s book maker Lynette Willoughby and published poet Clare Wigzell. These book are so sculptural and we're so keen to see these books in real life, having only seen them online!

"Rock Tree Landscape experiment widely with handmade book structures particularly encompassing themes of landscape, nature and maps.
Our work includes a broad variety of book forms, particularly sculptural books or complex book structures but also notebooks at accessible prices that play with contents and structures. Our large sculptural pieces often work to particular themes (e.g. 400th anniversary of Magellan's circumnavigation of the globe, Shakespeare’s 400th birthday, the 200th anniversary of the publication of Frankenstein, 200th anniversary of John Ruskin’s birth). We make use of altered books as well as handmade ones, playing with forms and ideas."

It's great to have The Bookband exhibiting with us again at this year's Notts Book Arts Fair on Saturday. Their displays are always such a treat to see with a wide variety of innovative handmade books to look through.

"The Bookband is a collaborative group of book artists. Our purpose is to promote our work and book-art more widely whilst sharing skills, ideas and encouragement with the group. We are six artists all of who are also members of Stroud Artists Books. We each make artists books with very differing styles and far ranging themes. Several are also print-makers and include original print in our work as well as original prose and poetry. Our work explores a range of book structures and can sometimes challenge the notion of what a book is.
By exploring our work together in regular online and in-person meetings, we aim to increase our own enjoyment of the process and to produce exciting and innovative work, both individual and collaborative.
We recently held our very first public exhibition which was very well received, raising awareness of this art form in our local area and resulted in a number of new attendees at Stroud Artist Books."

The Notts Book Arts Fair is coming soon and we've been enjoying sharing the artists joining us at Sneinton Market on Saturday. Rebecca Snow also has work at the Blend: Notts Book Arts Exhibition, currently showing in the foyer of Nottingham Central Library, so why not make a day of it and see both the exhibition and talk to the artist at the fair in one day!

"During my Fine Art degree, my practice was centred around a collection of 100 books, which I had found discarded or second hand. Many of these books had inscriptions. This intrigued me: these books were holding their own innate histories; stories that could not be read in their pages. To release these stories, I created art works from the books: folded sculptures, mixed media sculptures from the pages, imprinted porcelain and slip cast installations from the covers."

Quince Press will be joining us as one of the stallholders at the Notts Book Arts Fair on Saturday. These books are definitely ones to see in person and up close as they're so delicate and detailed!

"I produce limited editions, poem prints, book forms and other objects. My creative and critical work is concerned with the effects of landscape, building and memory and what this can tell us about our ongoing relationship with built and unbuilt landscapes."

Meet our Fair Artists!

Janice Simpson and Danny Barbour are sharing a stall and are looking forward to showing their recent work at the Notts Book Arts Fair on Saturday.

"Janice is a printmaker using a range of printmaking techniques, particularly printing directly from nature. She makes a variety of books including stitching, pocket concertinas, flag books and bobbin books, which are created using vintage materials such as mill and sewing bobbins and incorporate stitched elements. All of Janice’s books and covers are created from her own handmade prints."

"Danny is a mixed media artist who works across a variety of media but has recently focused on monoprint and collage. His interest in history, archaeology and metal detecting has led him to incorporate detecting finds and historic items such as documents, bank notes, stamps and other ephemera into his work. "

A taste of what's to come...
We're so excited to welcome our artists and visitors to the Notts Book Arts Fair on Saturday! Next up we have HGmakes & the Caseroom Press, two artists who are sharing a stall together.

"We are 2 artists (Hazel Grainger + Philippa Wood) of separate presses (HGmakes + the Caseroom Press) who have been working on collaborative artists' book projects since 2020, alongside our own practices.
Our handmade books use discarded ephemera and analogue print processes as a starting point to explore everyday experiences and conversations, and play with words and micro stories. We have developed a methodology of sending words or printed pages back and forth between us to adapt or work from, often creating challenges and leading to unexpected results that we would not have found working alone."

As we approach the Notts Book Arts Fair this Saturday we're sharing with you the artists coming to Nottingham. We're really pleased to welcome back David Armes from Red Plate Press who was at our first fair two years ago.

"I am a visual artist working with print, language and geography, primarily using letterpress printing to make typographic artworks that range in scale from artist’s books to art prints to large scroll installations. My work is often site-specific and considers how experience of place can be represented. I am especially interested in zones of contested use and ways in which capital can be resisted or circumvented. My influences come from sources as varied as vernacular maps, data visualisation and Ken Campbell’s artist’s books."

We're looking forward to meeting CĂ©line Siani Djiakoua at the Notts Book Arts Fair on Saturday. CĂ©line has a book in our Blend Exhibition, currently showing at Nottingham Central Library so this is a great chance to meet in person and see what else they've been working on.

"My core practice consists in delicate and elegant autobiographical line drawings which are both analytical and emotional, mainly representing a female figure.
My art practice has always involved a lot of craft and these past years, I have been exploring the technique of botanical printing, which is the use of plant material, directly printed on paper or fabric. At the fair I will be offering notebooks including botanical prints and naturally dyed paper, botanically printed cards and traditional prints with drawings."

We're excited to be joined by Amy Sterly Prints at the Notts Book Arts Fair on Saturday.

"I am originally a printmaker from Chicago who has been living in Wales for 30 years. I have been making large scale prints for many years until the Covid lockdown and I was faced with a very small space to work so I started making collage books with book and magazine scraps around the house and playing with different book forms. I love images of birds, flowers and nature. This started a new passion and I find the process very meditative during hard times. Making small moments of peace through book forms."

24/09/2024

Jenny Stevenson's book 'Interwoven Threads' will take a short break from the Blend Exhibition from today to go into her solo exhibition 'Reviving Melbourne - an Artistic Exploration of an Industrial Past' which is on at from 25th - 28th Sept, it will be back on display when the Blend exhibition moves to Nottingham Central Library on 4th October.

'Interwoven Threads' tells the story of framework knitting and boot and shoe industries in Melbourne, South Derbyshire, which grew, flourished, and then declined. This artist book honours the generations of families who worked in these factories, weaving their stories into the town’s history.
Each element of the book, from the geometric shapes to the woven layers, captures the essence of blending past and present. The mirrored pop-up shapes in the book structure shows how some factories have been demolished while others have been repurposed for modern times. The woven paper strips represent the passage of time, the connections between people and the interwoven lives of those who built and sustained these industries.
This piece celebrates Melbourne’s industrial past and shows how it continues to shape the present. "Interwoven Threads" invites you to reflect on how we remember the past and adapt to the future.
