~ Dr Benjamin Obadiah Iqbal Zephaniah ~
An incredibly inspirational writer, poet, actor, musician and activist who passed away yesterday after being diagnosed with a brain tumour just 8 weeks ago.
Benjamin was very outspoken about the racial injustices people face here in the UK and overseas. He spent his life working towards dismantling systems of oppression and tirelessly campaigning for racial justice, animal rights and many other social issues.
He was offered an OBE but turned it down explaining, “The OBE means ‘Order of the British Empire’. MBE is ‘Member of the British Empire’. I’ve been fighting against the empire all my life. I’ve been fighting against slavery and colonialism all my life. I’ve been writing to connect with people, not to impress governments and monarchy. So how could I then go and accept an honour that puts the word ’empire’ onto my name? That would be hypocritical” Dr Zephaniah, we salute you for being a real one! 🫡
He was also a voice against homophobia; in one interview he said, "For many years Jamaica was associated with freedom fighters and liberators, so it hurts when I see that the home of my parents is now associated with the persecution of people because of their sexual orientation.
I believe it is my duty to call upon all the progressive people of Jamaica, and those who have an interest in the political and cultural life of the country to take a stand against homophobia."
Benjamin was vegan before most of us knew what a vegan was, he believed in creating a peaceful world for all beings. We were really looking forward to seeing him perform at Vegan Camp Out next year, his presence will be greatly missed.
Like lots of other kids in the UK, we both had the privilege of meeting Benjamin when he visited our schools. I remember the first time I saw him, he came into my classroom to read us poetry and I was so in awe of him. Seeing a man who had black skin and locs like my dad walk into the room and inspire us all, gave me a feeling of pride that I will never forget.
His legacy will live on through his life’s work and he will continue to inspire us, always ✨
Rest in Power King 👑 ❤️💛💚
