At the AU Ambassadors Ball 2023 this Friday, December 8, Randall Robinson will be post-humously awarded a Lifetime Achievement Tribute.

Randall Robinson was an American lawyer, author and activist, noted as the founder of TransAfrica. He was known particularly for his impassioned opposition to apartheid, and for his advocacy on behalf of Haitian immigrants and Haitian president Jean-Bertrand Aristide.

Ambassador will be honored with the Kofi Annan Award at the AU Ambassadors Ball.

Susan Elizabeth Rice (born November 17, 1964) is an American diplomat, policy advisor, and public official. A member of the Democratic Party, Rice served as the 22nd Director of the United States Domestic Policy Council from 2021 to 2023, as the 27th U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations from 2009 to 2013, and as the 23rd U.S. National Security Advisor from 2013 to 2017.

She served on President Bill Clinton's National Security Council staff from 1993 to 1997 and was the assistant secretary of state for African affairs at the State Department from 1997 to 2001. Appointed at age 32, Rice was at the time the youngest person to have served as a regional assistant secretary of state. Rice's tenure saw significant changes in U.S.–Africa policy, including the passage of the African Growth and Opportunity Act, support for democratic transitions in South Africa and Nigeria, and an increased U.S. focus on fighting HIV/AIDS.

We are happy to have Hayde Adams as the Mistress of the Ceremony at the 2nd AU Ambassadors Ball.

Hayde Adams is the anchor on Voice of America’s hour-long Pan-African news and talk show, “Straight Talk Africa.” Prior to that, she co-hosted on VOA’s news show, “Our Voices”, a roundtable talk show with a Pan-African cast of women journalists. Originally from Cape Town, South Africa, Hayde joined VOA as a reporter, producer and host in 2016, bringing more than 20 years of broadcast experience in South African and European media.

Hayde is a versatile video producer, anchor and reporter. She believes in the power of storytelling to foster inclusivity, a human connection, and achieve social justice. She holds a bachelor’s degree with double majors in Communication and Political Science from the University of South Africa.

Introducing the recipient of the Mickey Leland Award

Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala is the seventh Director-General of the WTO. She took office on 1 March 2021, becoming the first woman and the first African to serve as Director-General.

She is a global finance expert, an economist and international development professional with over 40 years of experience working in Asia, Africa, Europe, Latin America and North America. Dr Okonjo-Iweala was formerly Chair of the Board of Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance. She was previously on the Boards of Standard Chartered PLC and Twitter Inc. She was appointed as African Union (AU) Special Envoy to mobilise international financial support for the fight against COVID-19 and WHO Special Envoy for Access to COVID-19 Tools Accelerator.

Dr Okonjo-Iweala twice served as Nigeria's Finance Minister (2003-2006 and 2011-2015) and briefly acted as Foreign Minister in 2006, the first woman to hold both positions. She had a 25-year career at the World Bank as a development economist, rising to the No. 2 position of Managing Director, Operations.

Meet Johanna Leblanc, J.D., LL.M; one of our panelists at the Diaspora Business Roundtable.

Ms. Johanna Leblanc is a trained lawyer specializing in national security law and foreign policy. Currently serving as a Partner at Adomi Advisory Group, PLLC. Ms. Leblanc served as a Legislative Director at the United States Congress, where she played a pivotal role in advancing both foreign and domestic policy agendas. She was the liaison to the White House, Department of State, and financial institutions. She also served as a Senior Foreign Policy Advisor to three Haitian ambassadors to the United States and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

In 2021, she was named one of the 40 Under 40 Nation's Best Advocates by the National Bar Association, where she later served as the Chief Foreign Policy Advisor. In 2019, she was also named as one of the Most Influential People of African Descent in Government and Politics. In 2017, Ms. Leblanc was appointed as a Commissioner to the Commission of African Affairs by Mayor Bowser. Since 2017, she has been a member of the Military Observation Commission Project (MOCP), authorized by the Pentagon.

Five-time Grammy Award winner Angélique Kidjo is one of the greatest artists in international music today, a creative force with sixteen albums to her name.

Time Magazine has called her "Africa's premier diva", and named her one of the 100 most influential people in the world for 2021. The BBC has included her in its list of the continent's 50 most iconic figures, and in 2011 The Guardian listed her as one of their Top 100 Most Inspiring Women in the World. Forbes Magazine has ranked Angelique as the first woman in their list of the Most Powerful Celebrities in Africa.

She is the recent recipient of the prestigious 2015 Crystal Award given by the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, the 2016 Amnesty International Ambassador of Conscience Award, the 2018 German Sustainability Award, the 2023 Vilcek Prize in Music, and the 2023 Polar Music Prize.

In celebration of the African Union's 20th Anniversary, the African Union Representational Mission to the U.S.A. hosted the African Union Diaspora Business Roundtable discussion on the African Continental Free Trade Area (AcFTA).

The business roundtable discussion focused on the policy, financial products, and plans of Afreximbank to promote intra-Africa trade which includes the diaspora, as well as the financing for Africa’s creative industry.

Guest Speakers included senior executives from Afreximbank, the AcFTA secretariat, prominent people from the arts and entertainment sector as well as diaspora business leaders.
