WIN A SLOT IN THE ALISHAN 3-DAY STAGE ULTRA IN BEAUTIFUL TAIWAN!!!

Have you ever been tempted to run a stage race? We had Taiwanese ultramarathon runner Kevin Lin in the shop last month to talk about his self-supported 3-day stage ultra – Alishan – which spans 106 kilometers of stunning terrain from 26th - 28th Feb 2023.

WE'RE GIVING AWAY A SLOT in the 106K event (there's also a 1-day 21K trail race), and if you're interested, All you have to do is:

1. Like , and on Instagram
2. Drop your Instagram handle into the comments of this post
3. Make sure your account is public for the duration of the giveaway

THE DRAWING WILL BE HELD ON 30TH DECEMBER.

With the famous "Five Wonders of Alishan" – railway, forest, sea of clouds, sunrise and sunset – as the background, the beautifully chosen terrain is almost entirely off-road, over fir-covered hills and through tea gardens and bamboo forests on some of Taiwan's most famous hiking trails.

The race will take place from 26th - 28th Feb 2023 and is self-supported. Participants will need to carry all their food and sleep and survival equipment.

This is a terrific event and format (a great introduction to self-supported stage racing), and it's close by!

More information and event registration here: https://www.superace-sport.com/superace/race/8

Also, if you DON'T win a free slot, Kevin and his team are offering our community a 10% discount on the entry fees (both the individual and team events) for the 106K 3-day race (no discount for the 21K, 1-day event, sorry!). Register here: https://reurl.cc/rZv4aZ with the discount code SA2023RDRC.

WIN A SLOT IN THE PIRATE BACKYARD ULTRA!!!

Had enough of Backyard Ultras? No, we didn't think so!

Our friends at Malatra Events are organising a Backyard Ultra in beautiful Putrajaya Wetland Park in the heart of Putrajaya on Saturday, 18 February (until ... ???) and they've offered us a free entry slot to give away.

The drawing will be held on 23rd December. All you have to do is:

1. Like , and on Instagram
2. In the comments of this post, nominate someone(s) you'd like to be considered for the giveaway (sure, you can nominate yourself!)
3. Make sure your account is public for the duration of the giveaway

What's a Backyard Ultra? The Beach Backyard Ultra is a form of ultramarathon race in which competitors must run a 6.7km lap of a pre-determined course in less than one hour. When each lap is completed, the time remaining within the hour is typically used to recover for the next hour's run. Exactly one hour after Beach Backyard Ultra’s first lap, competitors must run the next 6.7km lap with a one-hour window for completion. These loops are repeated hourly. The race ends when there is only one person remaining on course and they complete their final 6.7km loop and cross the finish line.

Fun, right???

Check out the Singapore Ocean Cup this weekend! 🚣🏿‍♂️

Posted • YES, IT'S MARATHON WEEKEND, BUT DON'T FORGET THE SINGAPORE OCEAN CUP!

We were very happy to deliver a Tailwind-sponsored 2-hour workshop on nutrition and fuelling (both in training and races, plus, don't forget recovery!) for the Singapore Paddle Club in the shop this past weekend.

The 3 pillars of sports nutrition are: water, electrolytes & calories. You need all three, so remember to stay hydrated (especially important in tropical Singapore!), even when you're out on the water.

To learn more about endurance sports nutrition, check out our blog post and/or come in to the shop to talk to us about your training and racing goals. It's important!

The Singapore Ocean Cup is back this year at Siloso Beach on Sentosa after a one-year hiatus (boo, COVID!), and it's Southeast Asia's biggest paddling championship. The racing will include outriggers, kayaks, surf skis and SUPs, and it promises to be a fun weekend.

Click over to and check it out!!!

P.S. Speaking of watersports, did you compete (or think about competing, LOL) in Fatburd Events' recent SUP & Run? Everyone had a great time, and we're huge fans of getting out of our comfort zones to cross-train or just have fun. Follow FATBURD EVENTS] for news about fun events such as the SUP & Run, and think about joining us next year for another edition!

ALISHAN IS A 3-DAY STAGE ULTRA IN BEAUTIFUL TAIWAN

Taiwanese ultramarathon runner Kevin Lin was in the shop this weekend to talk about the post-COVID return of his 3-day stage ultra – Alishan – which spans 106 kilometers of stunning terrain (and offers UTMB & ITRA points!). We love that Kevin put this race together 10 years ago to show off his country's natural beauty, and we love that it's back now that the borders are open again.

BEACH BACKYARD ULTRA WINNER EARNS HERSELF A COROS PACE 2

Sponsors Red Dot Running Company and COROS wanted to be sure to reward the winner of the Singapore edition of the Beach Backyard Ultra with a watch that would go the distance.

Last month, in the local open Beach Backyard Ultra staged alongside the world championships event, Leonie van den Haak was not only the women's champion, but also the overall winner, and earned herself a COROS PACE 2, which at 29g is the lightest GPS watch in the world. Leonie ran 18 hours, covering 120km/75 miles.

Thanks to the efficiency of COROS GPS battery technology, COROS PACE 2 offers 30 hours of full GPS battery life, which would have been more than enough to cover Leonie in this year's Beach Backyard Ultra, with another 10 hours to spare!

The COROS Pace 2 is available at Red Dot Running Company.

Posted • RDRC EVENT: TAIWANESE ULTRA LEGEND KEVIN LIN!

We posted the other day about a race presentation by Taiwanese ultra runner Kevin Lin.

The race – Alishan 2023 – is an exciting one, and if you don't have experience of Taiwanese trails and the incredible beauty of the country outside of Taipei, you should definitely check it out.

But Kevin's story is fascinating as well, and we look forward to hearing some of his stories next week in the shop.

For example, there was the time Kevin ran 7,000 kilometres across the Sahara Desert, through Senegal, Mauritania, Mali, Niger, Libya and Egypt! You can watch a Matt Damon-produced documentary about it! And when he was a graduate student, he won a 241-kilometre ultramarathon across the Atacama Desert in Chile. Oh, and he has run the 10,000-kilometre length of the Silk Road!!! Epic adventures.

The Alishan Ultramarathon is a 3-day 106km stage race, on the beautiful trails of Alishan in Taiwan, and will take place from 26th - 28th Feb 2023. See more at the Alishan website, here: https://www.superace-sport.com/superace/race/8

Kevin will be in the shop next Saturday afternoon. Come join us!

Date: 12th November (Sat), 2:00 pm
Venue: Red Dot Running Company
108 Sim Avenue, Singapore 387432

Please RSVP to let us know if you'll be coming!

SINGAPORE BACKYARD ULTRA WINNERS NEED 50+ HOUR BATTERY LIFE

Sponsors Red Dot Running Company and COROS wanted to be sure to reward the winner(s) of the Singapore edition of the Backyard Ultra – World Championships with a watch that would go the distance.

When Joshua Toh and Deric Lau ran for 51 hours, the choice was clear – they needed the brand-new COROS APEX 2 Pro, which delivers 75 hours of full GPS battery life (and 30 days of regular battery usage). The APEX 2 Pro features a sapphire glass screen with touchscreen capabilities; grade-5 titanium alloy bezel; redesigned GPS antenna for stronger performance; enhanced navigation experience; 32GB of internal storage including onboard music and mapping; and next-generation optical heart rate sensor.

The new APEX 2 Pro (with the new COROS APEX 2) is now available for pre-order via Red Dot Running Company and will be available later this month. Get yours now!

Excitement at the Beer Mile World Classic!!!

"America's Elizabeth Laseter crossed the line first with what would have been a world-record 6 minute, 15 second finish — but she was disqualified for drinking outside of the allotted nine-meter 'chug zone.' The second person to cross the line, Britain's Laura Riches, was also disqualified. And so America's Melanie Pozdol was declared the winner despite technically crossing the line third with a time of 6 minutes, 41 seconds. And yet, Robertson said cans weren't to blame. 'There were a normal amount of disqualifications this year,' he explained. 'The main reason for an athlete to get disqualified is having more than 4 total ounces of fluid/foam remaining across the 4 beers. Containers are collected during the race and measurements occur after the race. Even when using bottles, athletes still run into disqualification issues if they are not patient about getting all of the beer down in the chug zone.'"

Apparently bottles are the preferred chugging container for the runners who down a beer before each lap.

Posted • This weekend we saw 15 athletes representing Singapore at the Big Dog Ultra Satellite Team Championships. It took on the last man standing format where each runner has to complete a 6.7km loop every single hour. Those who can’t hit the timing, or choose not to complete the loop gets eliminated.

It was a crazy showdown between and as both gentlemen showed resilience and tenacity, gritted their teeth and just kept going. This wasn’t just about running - it was also about mind games, fighting the 💤monster, keeping your gut stable and staying in the zone.

51 hours and 341.7km later, Joshua took the crown 👑

This event has been nothing short of inspiring for a lot of us as we watched them go . Thanks & for organizing this.
