Flowers hold so many memories, but they are fleeting. I've been dipping my toes (fingers?) in the waters of bouquet preservation this year and I'm loving the results.
Working on this special 20th wedding anniversary bouquet today, capturing the beauty of these flowers just as they're coming to their end to preserve this memory forever. I can't wait to see the final results in a few days when the plaster hardens 😃

We never quite know what you're going to get, but we guarantee it'll be 🤩.
Early spring bouquets are soooo dependent on weather, everything blooms a little earlier or later every year, but they always seem to come together so perfectly. I guess mother nature truly know best!
WARNING - planting Dahlias this year will lead to a garden expansion next year....so plan accordingly 😉
We've been getting a lot of questions about planting Dahlias, so here's a quick run down for those interested.
1. Dry weather is more important than last frost date. If we see a dry warm(ish) week in our forecast before our last frost date, we take it. Planting in warm weather when there is also rain in the forecast is a no-go for us. Dahlia Tubers are super susceptible to rot, and a warm and wet environment is the worst way to get them started. In Kelowna, our technical last frost date is May long weekend, we will plant as early as last week of April if the weather is dry, and nighttime temperatures are consistently above 0. The tubers will get a slow start in the cool soil, but that's better than losing them to rot in wet soil. If the worst were to happen and we got a killing frost after planting, a frost won't penetrate the ground, any growth above ground might be toast but the tubers would be fine and they'll resprout.
2. Don't water your Dahlia tuber until you see green growth. The tuber has all the energy that little sprout needs for the first few weeks. Without any roots established yet, the tuber has no way to drink the water you give it, hence the rot. Once there's a healthy amount of green growth, you can safely assume that tubers has established roots and the plant now needs water almost every day here in the Okanagan!
3. Buy tubers from a local flower farm. Chances are there is a flower farm near you, or that will ship to you, that is selling Dahlia tubers. Growing, storing, and processing Dahlia Tubers is a lot of work! Buying tubers locally is not only a great way to support your local farmers but also ensures you're getting the best products. I'd bet your local farmer is doing their very best to make sure their tubers are plump and healthy, they get to you at the right time for planting and are montioring for any diseases. Yes, that's us
