Here's our current footprint for hardgood pickups. The dots aren't exact and the city names cluttered the maps - if you think a dot is close to you just ask.

We've got pending expansion into VA and OH - so this map will update later in the summer.

If you're near one of our distribution centers you'll be able to take advantage of the best prices - Houston, Dallas, & Cincy.

If you're near one of our retail outlets you can piggy back on our existing delivery which will be better than an independent shipment.

If you're no where close we can still palletize and ship LTL if it makes sense.

I will put out a short list of products we have excess inventory on to offer up to everyone at our cost.

Any questions?

Looking for some feedback from the wire service reps....

It is preached that part of the 20% commission that is paid to the sending florist factors in the expense of the customer service the sending florist provides.

What is the wire service's stance on a sending florist telling a customer which florist filled their order and telling them to contact a filler directly if there is an issue?

Do we get our 20% back?

While the Christmas rush is right around the corner, florists need to start planning for Valentine's Day. Most of us are inundated that week, we plan for flowers, additional staffing, and a large influx of orders.
We plan for the increase in orders but we aren't planning where they come from or which orders to take. Taking too many orders too early can hurt you. Taking too many orders from the same sender can also hurt you.
Take your planning to the next level and see what it can do for your holiday!

Do you actively manage your online reputation?
It can be frustrating. Rarely do people give you a thumbs up when you perform well but they are quick to Yelp when you make a mistake.
Research shows each negative review effects 30 future customers. Our average order value is around $80 - a negative review costs us $2,400 in opportunity!
Learn how to manage it. There are plenty of resources online.

Our next shipment of glass just hit the water overseas. We are tripling the amount of skus from the first shipment and should have the container in time for the Christmas sales spike!

Would you invest $94 a month to save $218 on purchases?

This is the result of a store with $150K in annual sales with their first shipment of vases.

If your Cost of Goods Sold is over 35% of your sales you need help. If it us under, great job on controlling your costs, we would still challenge you that we could lower it!

What are you spending $94 a month on?

Every florist should be measuring the true cost of accepting an incoming order.
When you can measure your cost you can improve your business decisions.
Dig deeper than the commonly accepted cost of 27% of the order.

Find out the true expense of filling an incoming wire order.

Easy Expense Cut:
Electricity.
With the amount of electricity used by florists (Coolers!) you should be able to get a great rate. If you are in a deregulated state you should shop your carrier at the end of every contract.
The savings could be quite large.

How we save $10,000 every summer:

Auto Insurance.

Business is down in the summer - so every Memorial Day we park a vehicle @ each store and take it out of service for until Labor Day. Make sure your deliveries per day per vehicle remain constant throughout the year. There is no reason to cover vehicles that are not in use but you have to make sure this vehicle is NEVER driven while not covered!

Wire Service Hack:

Quit filling codified items! Especially during Holidays!

1. These containers run about 3x the cost of standard vases and have a tough turnover rate due to their limited offerings. Who has Christmas vases from 2014 stuffed in their closet? We do. Maybe I should raid the closet for Christmas gifts this year! With unsold inventory the cost of these vases is much higher than the unit price you paid.

2. We get 4x the complaints on codified items as we do generic vased arrangements. The wire services are so florist unfriendly when it comes to customer complaints that you can not afford to fill high risk items such as these. There is enough content for it's own post on this Wire Service "practice".

3. Brand names are used to sell these items and the Florist pays for it! How great is it to sell a licensed product then pass on the licensing fee to someone else!

The easiest way to add margin to your Flower Shop:
Buy vases in bulk.
It's nerve wracking to change y our fresh vendors. You are comfortable with the quality and the service. If someone offers you a rose for half of what you are currently paying is it really a comparable rose?
Your customers will notice a vendor switch when it comes to fresh but will they really notice a bubble in what is referred to as "Grade 2" glass? They will not.
You need to be able to afford to buy more glass in one order, the ability to palletize the shipment, and the space in your store to house the additional number of boxes coming in.
This practice will easily cut your glassware expense by over 30%!

Check out what we have access to:

4" Clear Cubes - $1.34
6.5" Gathering Vase - $.81
7" Bouquet Vase - $.86
7" Plush Bears - $2.56

What are you paying at your local wholesaler?

I was speaking to the owner of a local florist who mentioned they had not changed the price of their dozen rose arrangement since the 70’s.

Is this common in any other industry?

When is the last time you changed the price of your dozen rose arrangement (without upgrading the arrangement)?
