If you are a non-profit and your gala is four months away and something just changed – this one is for you.

Maybe your development director gave notice. Maybe the person who has always "handled the gala" is gone. Maybe you looked up and realized you are the one holding the bag and you don't know where to start.

Four months is tight. I will not pretend otherwise.

What can I do in that window? Run your logistics, build your run of show, manage your RSVP tracking and seating, source vendors through a network I have spent nine+ years building, and plug my own systems and timeline directly into your event so you are not starting from scratch.

A year ago today I walked out of my full-time job and into the scariest thing I have ever done.

I had spent years as an event planner inside non-profits — good work, important work, work I was proud of. But I kept hitting walls. Budget walls. Creative walls. The feeling that I was producing the same event on a slightly different budget with slightly different centerpieces. I was burning out and I knew it.

So I left. On my own terms, on my own schedule, with no guarantees.

This past year has been equal parts terrifying and clarifying. I have mostly taught myself how to do this business thing, leaning on my community when I needed to, figuring out the rest as I went. I have planned non-profit galas and donor events. I have coordinated weddings and events that genuinely lit me up. I have said yes to things that scared me and figured them out anyway.

Something I've never said out loud: I never dreamed of being an event planner when I was a kid. I wanted to be an artist. Event planning is something I fell into. And somewhere along the way I realized it is the thing that lets me be creative (I can't bring myself to say I'm an artist). Every event is a blank canvas. Every client is a collaboration. Every room I walk into on event day is something I helped make from nothing.

You know what? I am damn good at this. It took me a year of working for myself to really believe that.

One year in. Two non-profit galas. A growing list of clients who trust me with the moments that matter. The scariest, most rewarding thing I have ever done.

Six months before a wedding and I am already walking the venue.

That is not unusual for me. The earlier I get into a space, the better I understand what it can do – where the light lands, how guests will move through it, where the quiet moments happen and where the energy builds.

Dream Point Ranch in Bixby is a venue worth walking slowly. The kind of place where the outdoor ceremony space makes you stop and just look for a minute.

This wedding has a soft romantic minimalist vibe that is going to feel right at home here. We are still months out but the planning is already in motion – vendor meetings, timeline builds, the details that make a wedding feel intentional rather than assembled.

Saturday night was one of the biggest nights of my year.

ARTini, presented by Arts Alliance Tulsa, brought over 500 people to 101 Archer for an evening of art, martinis, and Tulsa connection. We planned for the August heat – fans, extra ice, the works. August had other ideas. The ice melted quickly. The fans tried their best. And somehow people pulled out their own fans, mopped their foreheads, and kept bidding on art anyway.

When the heat becomes a shared experience instead of a problem, you know the room has the right energy.

Twelve restaurants competed for best martini and bite pairing. A ch*****ne skirt held court in the VIP area – a destination moment I had designed and quietly worried no one would find. It was full all night. The cocktail bubble blower showed up and made everyone smile. And of course, the art was everywhere you looked.

At some point I stopped moving long enough to look around at the connections, the moments, the energy that was just right, and thought: this is what I was building.

This was my first non-profit client as the owner of KE Events. Nine years planning events inside organizations like this one, and doing it now on my own, for a client whose mission I genuinely believe in.

Four days. This is what we have been building.

ARTini, the annual art auction and gala presented by Arts Alliance Tulsa, happens August 15 at 101 Archer. Local artists. Art auction. Martinis. An evening that raises money for arts programming across Tulsa.

I have been planning this event for months. The installation went up in July. The gallery has been open to the public since then. And on Saturday night, it all comes together.

This is my first non-profit client as the owner of KE Events. I have spent over nine years planning events inside non-profit organizations. Doing it now, on my own, for a client I believe in, feels different. In the best way.

Four days.

There is a hotel in Memphis where the ducks have their own elevator.

The Peabody Memphis has a duck master. Every morning at 11 am he rolls out a red carpet, escorts five ducks down from their rooftop home, and watches them waddle into the lobby fountain while a crowd of people lose their minds with delight.

At 5 pm he brings them back up to bed.

They have their own elevator. It is reserved exclusively for the ducks.

I spent last week in Memphis visiting a friend and ended up at the Peabody bar, where I paid an upcharge to get a rubber ducky floating in my cocktail. Zero regrets.

I plan events for a living. Details are kind of my thing. But I did not expect a hotel in Tennessee to out-detail me with a duck procession and a ceremonial red carpet.

Fifteen years ago I stayed at POSTOAK Lodge & Retreat for a Leadership Tulsa retreat. I remember thinking it was the kind of place that made you slow down without trying.

I went back this week for the first time since. New management. New offerings. Same rolling hills just outside Tulsa, but now with ropes courses, rock walls, a canopy tour, disc golf, pavilions, fire pits, and lodges that could host everything from a board retreat to a wedding.

Walking through it I kept thinking about the non-profit executive directors and development directors I know — the ones who spend all year pouring into their organizations and never stop long enough to let their teams breathe together. A board retreat at a place like this is not a luxury. It is a strategy.

The sky really is the limit on what you can do here and where you can do it. I am already thinking about what kinds of events belong in this space.

Unpopular opinion: a gala can be a huge success and still miss the point entirely.

Most gala guests know the event. The venue, the food, the band, the auction. But they could not tell you what their money actually does. Not really. Not in a way that stays with them when they get home.

And I get why that feels like a fine trade-off. A great event is a great event. People show up, they have fun, they give.

I have been in non-profit event planning for nine years and this is the thing I cannot stop thinking about. We have gotten very good at producing great events. We have not gotten as good at making donors feel the mission while they are sitting in the room.

There is a difference between a guest who attends a great gala and a donor who leaves knowing why the organization exists. The second one is who writes the check three weeks later; who brings a friend next year; who actually moves the mission forward.

When a room full of donors feels why an organization exists, the energy shifts. People lean in.

The goal is not just a successful event. It is a room full of people who leave knowing why it mattered.

A fun event is not enough. Make them feel it.

Twenty minutes from Tulsa and you would swear you were somewhere in the French countryside.

European Style Oklahoma Wedding Venue hosted a vendor soiree last month and I have not stopped thinking about it since. The glass conservatory. The sprawling hills. The views that make you forget you are in Oklahoma. A live watercolor painter capturing guests as they moved through the space. It was a lot – in the best possible way.

This venue was built by a family for their youngest daughter's wedding, and you can feel that care in every detail of how it was designed. It is not a converted barn or a rented ballroom. It is a place that was built with love and opened to share.

Hands down it is one of the most beautiful event spaces in the Tulsa area.

This event was close to three years in the making. And it was worth every single minute.

Last September, nearly 100 Kappa Delta sisters gathered at the Oaks Country Club to celebrate 100 years of the Tulsa Alumnae Chapter – and I had the honor of being on the centennial committee.

I have been a Kappa Delta for a long time. As a former Tulsa Alumnae Chapter President, sitting in that room with women I had not seen in years, meeting sisters for the first time, all of us celebrating the same sisterhood – I remembered exactly why I love this sisterhood.

This is what a milestone event is supposed to feel like. Not just a luncheon. A room full of meaning. Everything chosen with intention. Everything handmade, historical, and personal to the women in the room.
