✨20 months sober✨

This pic is bank hols monday 2020 vs 2022 and I can feeeel the difference just looking at these pics. The one on the left is me hanging after being on it all weekend and the right is me today going to work at Radio 1, I know which one I prefer 🙃

I finished therapy last week, I needed help with all of the chaos that had built up inside me that hadn’t been dealt with. My therapist has changed my life, I wish I’d done it sooner. It was really powerful stuff but not a walk in the park. So much came up in our sessions that I didn’t think was important but of course when you’re boozing you’re not giving yourself the chance to really feeeeel emotions so they get stuck in your mind like raw data floating around with nowhere to go until something triggers it. So unsurprisingly I had all of this trauma in my mind that was unprocessed and needed to be spoken about so it could be filed away neatly. Turns out my early years of being bullied and shamed had permeated every fibre of my being, something gay men carry with them forever. Abandonment issues had messed up my understanding of relationships. I didn’t really like myself, in fact I had a serious disconnect with the person I was looking at in the mirror. All of this I’m still working on. I was using alcohol to numb the pain but it doesn’t go anywhere, it’s gonna be there in the morning. I was acting out at the first sign of a storm brewing because I was petrified of being hurt, feeling lonely and everything falling apart, as it had done before. I still feel this now, when I sense danger I panic on a deep level but I have nowhere to run now so I face the storm head on and I’ve surprised myself at how well I manage difficult situations. We think booze is helping ✨taking the edge off✨ but for me and for so many others, it makes it worse. I have a better understanding of myself now and look forward to the challenges of life as I know I have the clarity I need which is why I stopped drinking in the first place.

Please reach out for help if you need it. It won’t fix everything but it will definitely help, whether you drink or not.

I travelled India in 2017 and had the most incredible experience of my life. I miss the curries so much, you’ve not had a proper curry til you’ve been to India. So I’m super fussy when it comes to Indian food but these guys seem to be on it. The menu is amazing I had the Goan Prawn Curry which is terrible for my IBS but good for the soul. Check out 🤌
